Israel-Iran strikes: What are the worst-case scenarios?

For now the fighting between Israel and Iran seems restricted to the two nations. At the United Nations and elsewhere there have been widespread calls for restraint.

But what if they fall on deaf ears? What if the fighting escalates and expands?

Here are just a few possible, worst-case scenarios.

UK civil servants revolt over ‘Israel’s genocide’

London

British civil servants must stop helping Israel with “potential war crimes” in Gaza, union bosses have demanded.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, which represents almost 200,000 civil servants across Whitehall, has advised members to “stop all work within the civil service and its related areas which in any way potentially enables acts of genocide”.

It has pledged to support civil servants who refuse to work on Israel and demanded that mandarins be given legal immunity for aiding potential “war crimes”.

Adam Zivo: ‘This is the big war’ — Israelis stoic as Iran counterattacks

TEL AVIV — Israel launched a devastating strike against Iran’s nuclear program early Friday morning, with missiles and drones devastating military targets throughout the country. Although Iran has vowed revenge — and indeed launched missiles on Friday — and already retaliated with more than 100 drones, the mood in Tel Aviv remains remarkably ataraxic.

As munitions soared towards Tehran in the middle of the night, a blaring emergency alert was sent to every phone in Israel, warning residents to obey further government instructions “in preparation for a significant threat.” Rumours had been swirling in the preceding days that an attack on Iran was imminent, so many recipients immediately understood what was happening, even without confirmation from the government announcements that came shortly afterwards.

Iran threatens to attack British and American bases

Iran has warned the United States, United Kingdom and France against assisting Israel to deter Tehran’s strikes, saying that their bases and ships in the region will be targeted if they do so.

American officials confirmed that the US military had helped to shoot down Iranian missiles headed for Israel, after Iran launched wave after wave of retaliatory missile strikes less than a day after Israel’s surprise attack on Friday morning. Britain was not believed to have been involved.

On Friday, it was reported that Britain is monitoring the safety of staff at the UK embassy in Tehran, fearing that they could be the target of reprisals as the US and Canada closed their missions.

The road to Tehran has been paved: IDF secures air route for stronger strikes on Iran

The Israel Air Force is now capable of operating without obstruction as far as Tehran, following what was described as the destruction of a majority of Iran’s air defense systems, security officials said on Saturday morning.

The reported elimination of Syria’s military capabilities, including those of Hezbollah, has further expanded Israel’s operational range and shortened flight paths to Iran.

‘Unreliable’ UK not told in advance about Israel’s attack on Iran

The UK was not officially informed about Israel’s attack on Iran before it happened and provided no support to the mission, it is understood, highlighting the deteriorating relationship between the two countries.

Diplomats said it appeared Israel no longer considered the UK to be a “reliable partner” after Sir Keir Starmer placed sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers this week.

Military planners inside the Ministry of Defence were braced for the strikes on Thursday night. However, the UK appeared to have been cut out of the loop on the operation, despite being involved in previous strikes.

Canadian demonstrators held, passports confiscated ahead of planned global march to Egypt-Gaza border

More than 40 Canadians planning to participate in the global march to Gaza, alongside thousands of other foreign activists, have been detained in Egypt and had their passports confiscated by authorities, organizers told CBC News.

A group of 83 Canadians arrived in Cairo on Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of the scheduled march to Egypt’s border with Gaza, an attempt to draw attention to the deepening humanitarian crises facing Palestinians under Israel’s blockade of the war-torn territory more than 20 months after attacks began.

Liberal Gov’t calls on Israel to stop embarrassing their Mullah pals and surrender

Call on Canadian government to protect Jewish community

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has called for an end to the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran following Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets and Iran’s launch of unmanned aerial vehicles toward Israeli territory.

In a statement released Friday, Anand said Canada is closely monitoring the rise in regional tensions and stressed that continued military action could trigger a broader regional conflict with devastating consequences.

In contrast, Opposition Leader and head of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre defended Israel’s right to defend itself, including by targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which he said carries the potential for genocide.

Iranian missiles fired at Israel

Iranian missiles streaked across the sky above Israel after Tehran retaliated with a barrage of rockets.

The Israeli army has ordered all citizens to head to shelters after it said it had identified projectiles being launched from Iran.

Israel has launched a series of stunning strikes against Iran, aiming to cripple Tehran’s nuclear programme and its military leadership.

The IDF said about 200 jets were involved in striking around 100 targets on Friday morning, which appeared to include senior members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and top nuclear scientists.

Those killed included Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the powerful IRGC, and Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, according to reports.

Did The Palestinian Authority President Really Condemn the Hamas Attack of October 7, 2023?

France claimed this month that Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas had condemned the invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, the Iran-backed terrorist group. During the attack, Hamas terrorists and other Palestinians murdered 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, wounded thousands. They kidnapped another 251 people to the Gaza Strip, where 52 – dead and alive – remain in captivity.

Paris said in a statement that the purported condemnation was included in a letter Abbas sent to France on the eve of a United Nations conference in New York, scheduled for this month, to push for recognizing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The conference is to be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

Canadian prime minister accused of ‘callously’ undermining Israel in recent remarks

Carney and Islamophobia Tsar – gets assurance daughter won’t be tossed off roof.

Canada has been “jolted awake” by new threats to its security and sovereignty, “including from an emboldened Russia and an assertive China,” Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, said in a June 9 speech on defense spending.

“Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine shattered previous assumptions of European post-Cold War security, leading to sharp reappraisals of the costs of collective responsibility and underscoring how precious and precarious are international law, sovereignty, territorial integrity and human rights,” he said.

Trump Cannot Ignore the Latest Damning Evidence of Iran’s Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons

Amid concerns that US President Donald J. Trump is backtracking on his pledge to confront Iran over its controversial nuclear programme, new evidence pointing to Iran’s clandestine attempts to develop nuclear weapons should persuade the Trump administration to make the Iran threat one of its top priorities.

The latest evidence that Tehran has spent the past few decades developing nuclear weapons has come in the form of a bombshell report published by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN-sponsored body responsible for monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities.
