Tirades by Twits

Closing in on half a century of political rants at the Oscars.

It all goes back to the 1970s, as do so many of the worst features of contemporary American society and culture. At the 1974 Oscar ceremony, Roger Moore and Liv Ullmann stepped onstage to present the Best Actor award. For some reason, Ullmann decided to quote her frequent collaborator Ingmar Bergman: “Often to be most eloquent is to be silent.” This aperçu didn’t seem particularly relevant at the moment, but about five minutes later it would seem the very deepest wisdom.

How Hollywood destroyed Michael Cimino

Talent alone couldn’t keep the lights on

Of all the downfalls in Hollywood history, Michael Cimino’s haunts me the most, destroyed by his artistic ambitions in a corporate town whose rules he didn’t want to play by. Orson Welles and Peter Bogdanovich may come close, but they never ruined an entire movement or destroyed a film studio. In a single stroke of hubris and artistic obsession, Cimino burnt down the New Hollywood that created him with just one movie: Heaven’s Gate (1980).

Alec Baldwin wants a court to prove he’s not guilty of Halyna Hutchins’s death

“He affects unselfishness, but is in reality fanatically, even maniacally, self-centered…. He is childlike in his pursuit of pleasure, but shrewd and willful in his studied neglect of responsibility. His sensibilities are exquisitely tender, and yet he has a talent for causing pain…He professes universal tolerance and sweetness to all, though is willing to put his friends through shame, fear, and harm rather than see his own comfort threatened.” No, this quote does not refer to Alec Baldwin, apt though it may seem. It is drawn from an essay about Harold Skimpole, a character in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. Revisiting the novel, I was struck by the similarity between Harold Skimpole and Alec Baldwin.

Usual cast of Celebrity Idiots sign petition calling on RBC to stop financing Coastal GasLink pipeline in B.C.

Dozens of celebrities have signed a petition calling on the Royal Bank of Canada to stop financing the Coastal GasLink pipeline project in northern B.C.

The campaign, “No More Dirty Banks,” asks for the bank to withdraw its financial support of the pipeline immediately. It appears to have been signed by dozens of artists like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Amy Schumer. Celebrities have signed the petition because RBC is parent company to City National Bank, known as the “bank of the stars.”

I think it’s great that clueless wealthy celebrities want to put ordinary people out of work.

Rust armorer faults Alec Baldwin: He knew to ‘never point a firearm at crew members’

The armorer for Rust is not letting Alec Baldwin off the hook for last year’s tragic on-set shooting in New Mexico that killed one member of the Western film’s staff and injured another.

Responding to Baldwin’s recent court filing in which he tried to evade liability, armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed insisted he violated gun safety protocols.

Alec Baldwin’s despicable defense in the shooting of Halyna Hutchins

In the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins at his hands, Alec Baldwin knows who is to blame: Halyna Hutchins.

In jaw-dropping court documents filed on Friday morning, Baldwin says she’s the one that asked the gun be pointed at her; that the production was a smooth, well-oiled machine; that her widower, Matthew, has inexplicably gone from amenable to vengeful — and oh, how confusing and upsetting this is to Baldwin; and that hey, no matter what, Baldwin’s contract indemnifies him for any damages.

Alec Baldwin says Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’s TOLD him to point the gun at her and pull the trigger

Alec Baldwin claimed that he was following Halyna Hutchins’ directions when he pointed what turned out to be a gun loaded with live rounds at her on the set of the movie ‘Rust’ and pulled the trigger, killing the cinematographer, according to a new court document.

The actor made this allegation in an arbitration demand that his lawyers filed on Friday against his fellow producers. The document also maintains that Baldwin’s contract protected him from financial responsibility related to Hutchins’ death.

Baldwin has been named as a defendant in multiple lawsuits that have been filed in connection with the fatal shooting.

Despite Years of Hollywood Kowtowing, Beijing Censors Reject Blockbusters

Communist officials are increasingly blocking American films.

Chinese cultural controllers blocked LeBron James’s shot at cinematic success last summer by refusing to release the NBA star’s $150 million film Space Jam: A New Legacy, providing a preview of the Middle Kingdom’s new, but poorly publicized, media policies.

American blockbuster films are no longer in fashion from Shanghai to Beijing, and the number of U.S. movies given distribution in the 1.4 billion-person nation has been nearly cut in half over the past two years.

Halyna Hutchins: Husband reveals anger with Alec Baldwin failing to take responsibility over shooting

The husband of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has said it is “absurd” that producer Alec Baldwin is not taking responsibility for her death.

Matt Hutchins told NBC’s Today he felt “angry” seeing the actor talk publicly about his wife’s death.

Ms Hutchins was killed on the set of his movie Rust in October, after a prop gun Mr Baldwin was holding discharged.
