As I sit in synagogue this Yom Kippur, the holiest day in our calendar, my heart is heavy with fear and sadness. The sanctuary, usually a place of solace and reflection, now feels like a fragile bubble in a world increasingly hostile to Jews. Today, once again, that bubble was violently pierced.
One of the victims killed at the Manchester synagogue attack appears to have been shot dead by armed police officers.
In a statement, the Greater Manchester police chief constable, Sir Stephen Watson, said the Home Office pathologist had provisionally determined that the man had died of a gunshot wound.
The suspect, Jihad al-Shamie, did not have a firearm and the only shots fired were by the police officers at the scene. It is believed that the victim was among those behind the synagogue door seeking to prevent the attacker from gaining entry.

We have run out of virgins’, ran the caption. At least Kurt Westergaard’s now infamous effort chimed with the title. He had drawn Muhammad wearing a turban containing a bomb, accompanied by the Muslim declaration of faith: ‘There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God.’ The cartoons were undoubtedly provocative, as indeed they were intended to be. They stood firmly in a long-standing, anti-clerical tradition of satire.
This week, federal officials made an astounding announcement: Nearly half of all immigrants in greater Minneapolis were found to have committed some form of immigration fraud.

A market stallholder who groomed and raped two schoolgirls in Rochdale has been jailed for 35 years.
Mohammed Zahid, 65, also known as “Boss Man”, gave free underwear from his lingerie stall at Rochdale Indoor Market to both teenagers, with money, alcohol and food, in return for the expectation of regular sex with him and his friends.
Zahid and six other men were convicted in June of various sexual offences against the two white teenage girls, who did not know each other, between 2001 and 2006.

A migrant who assaulted four people at the Bell Hotel in Epping wants to return to Syria, a court has heard.
Mohammed Sharwarq, 32, was a resident at the Bell Hotel in the Essex town when he assaulted four people between July 25 and Aug 12.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and four of assault by beating, and has been jailed for 16 weeks.
