Macron’s Folly: Is he serious about fixing France’s Islam problem?

Last October, I reported here that French president Emmanuel Macron had just “delivered what, on the face of it, seemed to be a remarkable speech on Islam.” Having previously been wishy-washy on the topic, he now promised a new program “intended to defend French laïcité, or official secularism, from ‘Islamist separatism,’” which he explicitly characterized as an existential threat to the Republic. Acknowledging that “one reason why ‘Islamist separatism’ had been allowed to fester was the ‘cowardice’ of French authorities,” Macron proclaimed that a new day had dawned. In public services, in cultural and athletic associations, in schools and universities, and in other sectors of society, Islamic indoctrination would be officially, firmly, and comprehensively resisted, and Islam itself modernized into an “Islam of the Enlightenment.”

Twilight in Paris – Twenty French generals implore the government to take a firm hand against chaos.

In France this week, 20 retired military generals, 80 officers, and 1,000 lower-ranking soldiers signed an open letter expressing concern over “mortal dangers” they say face the Republic. President Macron’s government has instructed the army chief of staff to discipline the signatories for inciting insurrection.

The letter bears close attention on several grounds. Although the signatories warn they wish to act only after  the outbreak of civil conflict, Macron’s response shows the government understands the situation has already deteriorated to a point where a true coup or uprising—an event quite unlike the shambolic ordeal in Washington on January 6th—might erupt at the slightest provocation.

That war is coming.

French police are being targeted by Islamists – and by accusations of Islamophobia.

Fear, loathing and the French police

In the elegant commuter town of Rambouillet, south of Paris, last Friday, a Tunisian immigrant, identified as Jamel G, approached a uniformed, unarmed female police administrator from behind. She was returning to the police station after feeding the metre of her parked car. He trapped her in the entrance lobby, stabbed her in the abdomen and then sliced her throat, hollering ‘Allahu Akbar’. A policeman tried to unjam the door to stop him. When he was finally able to, he fired on the attacker after he refused to comply with an order to relinquish his weapon, killing him. For Stéphanie Monfermé, a mother of two, it was already too late. A tweet from President Macron, within hours, linked the attack to Islamist terrorism.

Muslims harass Muslim town councilor who offered refuge to teacher hiding from death threats for showing Mohammed cartoon in class

Pressure continues to mount for the deputy leader of Slough Borough Council to resign after protesters flocked to the council building for the third time, demanding her to step down over controversial Facebook posts.

On Friday, April 23, campaigners gathered at the Observatory House on Windsor Road with placards of ‘stop Islamophobia’ and of the deputy leader’s face, councillor Sabia Akram, crossed out with the words ‘shame on you’ attached.

…Cllr Akram (Lab,Elliman), who is Muslim, sparked controversy after she posted on Facebook, welcoming the Batley Grammar School teacher to the town if he needed to leave the area.

The Yorkshire teacher and his family are in hiding after he showed a cartoon drawing of the Prophet from the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to pupils during a religious education class on blasphemy.

Generals call for military rule to halt France ‘disintegrating with Islamists’

Generals call for military rule to halt France ‘disintegrating with Islamists’

Twenty retired generals have created a political storm in France with a call for a military takeover if President Macron fails to halt the “disintegration” of the country at the hands of Islamists.

The open letter, published in Valeurs Actuelles, a right-wing news magazine, has gained resonance after a Tunisian Islamist stabbed to death a 49-year-old woman who worked at a police station in Rambouillet, in the western Paris commuter belt, on Friday.

Macron’s government condemned the appeal, whose first signature was Christian Piquemal, a former head of the Foreign Legion, comparing it to the failed coup by generals against President de Gaulle 60 years ago this month.

Mark my words. France will cede territory to the Islamists in our lifetime.

Afghanistan War: How can the West fight terrorism after leaving?

US, British and Nato combat forces are leaving Afghanistan this summer. The Taliban are growing stronger by the day while al-Qaeda and Islamic State groups are conducting ever more brazen attacks. So how can they be contained now that the West will no longer have military resources in the country?

Western intelligence officials believe they still aspire to plot international terrorist attacks from their Afghan hideouts, just as Osama Bin Laden did with 9/11.

It is a problem that is starting to vex UK policy chiefs as the deadline of 11 September for US President Joe Biden’s withdrawal draws closer. As the British chief of defence staff, General Sir Nick Carter, said recently: “This was not the outcome we had hoped for.” There is now a serious risk that the gains made in counter-terrorism over the last 20 years, at enormous cost, could be undone as Afghanistan’s future takes an uncertain turn.

Protests in France as man who killed Jewish woman avoids trial

Thousands of protesters have rallied in Paris and across France after the killer of a Jewish woman was declared unfit to stand trial because he was judged to have suffered a psychotic episode caused by cannabis use.

Kobili Traoré is accused of beating 65-year-old Lucie Attal – better known as Sarah Halimi – and throwing her from the balcony her Paris apartment in 2017.

French courts have recognised the killing as an antisemitic crime but declared that 32-year-old Traoré, currently in a psychiatric hospital, could not be tried as he was in the grip of a drug-induced “delusional fit” and not in control of his actions.

A female police worker in France has been killed by a knifeman who shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ before he was shot dead by her colleagues.

The 49-year-old mother-of-two was slashed in the throat by the Tunisian on Friday afternoon as she worked in the main police station in the Paris suburb of Rambouillet.

The administrative agent, who had worked for the police since 1993, had recently returned from her lunch break and had ‘popped out of the station to change her parking disc on her car’ when she was pounced on by the attacker in the lobby.

Quebec Superior Court upholds religious symbols ban, but Anglo schools exempt

The Quebec Superior Court has struck down some sections of the province’s secularism law, but also ruled its most controversial provisions are constitutional.

In a ruling handed down Tuesday morning, Justice Marc-André Blanchard said the Quebec government has the right to restrict what religious symbols are worn by government employees, such as teachers, police officers and prosecutors.

But he also said the law can’t be applied to English schools because it violates minority language education rights, protected under Section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
