Immigration Minister Marc Miller says the federal government is continuing to investigate options for giving status to some undocumented people in Canada — but he doesn’t see consensus on the issue in the country or in the government caucus.

With Canadians continuing to face a housing crisis and high living costs, a new survey has found a growing number of residents view immigration as having a negative affect on the country.
The Research Co. poll, which was released Wednesday, found 44 per cent of respondents believe immigration is having a mostly negative affect on Canada, up six per cent from last year.
“This is not something we saw a year ago or two years ago,” said Mario Canseco, Research Co. president. “It’s been slowly bubbling.”

A majority of voters support efforts to mass deport illegal aliens residing in the United States, a newly released survey found.
Conducted by CBS News/YouGov, the poll showed that 62 percent of registered voters favor, “in principle, a new government program to deport all [foreign nationals] living in the U.S. illegally.” This includes backing from 88 percent of Republicans, 60 percent of independents, and 38 percent of Democrats.
Despite its geographic isolation from the rest of the world save for the United States, Canada was the fifth largest recipient country of asylum seekers last year.
According to the latest global trends report released Thursday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (also known as the United Nations Refugee Agency), Canada received 146,800 new claims in 2023, up from 94,000 the year before. Only four countries were ahead: the U.S. (1.2 million), Germany (329,100), Egypt (183,100) and Spain (163,200).
Some first-year students attending the University of Guelph may have trouble finding a place to stay during the semester.
The university recently announced that over 7,000 high school students across Ontario who had applied for programs at U of G have accepted offers of admission.
