Gunman in Lunar New Year massacre found dead; motive unclear

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — Authorities searched for a motive for the gunman who killed 10 people at a Los Angeles-area ballroom dance club during Lunar New Year celebrations, slayings that sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities and cast a shadow over festivities nationwide.

The suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday in the van that authorities say he used to flee after being prevented from attacking another dance hall. A man whose family runs the venue confronted the assailant in the lobby and wrested the gun from him, The New York Times reported.

The massacre in Monterey Park was the nation’s fifth mass killing this month — and it struck one of California’s largest celebrations of a holiday observed in many Asian cultures, dealing another blow to a community that has been the target of high-profile violence in recent years.

Monterey gunman thought dance instructors said ‘evil things about him’

The gunman who slaughtered 10 people at a California dance club before killing himself had been a regular patron at the venue — and believed that the instructors said “evil things about him.”

Huu Can Tran, 72, opened fire at Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park late Saturday with a semi-automatic pistol, killing 10 people and wounding at least 10 others before storming the rival Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, where a bystander disarmed him.

Update – California cops hunt ‘Asian man’ over Chinese Lunar New Year dance studio massacre but ‘unclear’ if linked to second shooting two miles away: Ten dead – five men and five woman – and ten hospitalized

Law enforcement in California say the suspect in the Chinese New Year dance club massacre has been described as an ‘Asian man,’ and that it remains unclear if the suspect is linked to another shooting two miles down the road.

The update arrived as a desperate manhunt remains underway by law enforcement in the Los Angeles area after a gunman left 10 dead and another 10 hospitalized at a Monterey Park dance hall on Saturday night.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — A gunman killed 10 people and wounded 10 others at a Los Angeles-area ballroom dance club following a Lunar New Year celebration, setting off a manhunt for the suspect in the fifth mass killing in the U.S. this month.

Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said Sunday that the wounded were taken to hospitals and their conditions range from stable to critical. He said the 10 people died at the scene in the city of Monterey Park.

Meyer said people were “pouring out of the location screaming” when officers arrived at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He said officers then went into the ballroom and found victims as firefighters treated the wounded.

Warnings on non-binary gay club shooter stir questions about old case

DENVER (AP) — A California woman who warned a judge last year about the danger posed by the suspect in the Colorado Springs gay nightclub shooting said Friday that the deaths could have been prevented if earlier charges against the suspect weren’t dismissed.

Jeanie Streltzoff — a relative of alleged shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich — urged Colorado Judge Robin Chittum in a letter last November to incarcerate the suspect following a 2021 standoff with SWAT teams that uncovered a stockpile of more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms) of explosive material, firearms and ammunition.

Aldrich should have been in prison at the time of the shooting and prevented from obtaining weapons, she told The Associated Press on Friday.
