In the days since President Joe Biden’s widely-criticised debate performance against former president Donald Trump, Democrats across the country have begun questioning whether Mr Biden is the best candidate for the party.

Most voters think Democrats have a better chance of keeping the White House if Biden isn’t the nominee, a CNN poll found this week.

The BBC spoke to Democratic voters who reflected that concern but who also worried about the logistics of switching candidates this far into the campaign.

Former President Donald Trump referred to President Biden as a “broken-down pile of crap” in a leaked video where the Republican White House hopeful suggests his 2024 opponent will soon drop out of the race.

The video clip, obtained by the Daily Beast, shows the 78-year-old presumptive GOP presidential nominee sitting in a golf cart — with his son Barron Trump riding shotgun — as he critiques the 81-year-old president and offers his analysis on the state of the race.

In the immediate aftermath of Thursday’s presidential debate, open speculation about Joe Biden’s electoral viability was mostly consigned to left-leaning commentators, columnists, and former U.S. senator Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.).

But the president’s foundation of support among congressional Democrats began to fall out from under him this week, when several sitting lawmakers either publicly called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race or entertained speculation that he should strongly consider stepping aside.

The fallout from Joe Biden’s terrible debate performance continues unabated. In the days following Biden’s infamous face-off with Donald Trump, many in the media have called on Biden to drop out of the race, and donors are starting to bail on him. Elected Democrats have generally been reluctant to speak out publicly but have privately expressed concern or anonymously told the media they think he should leave the ticket.

President Biden has told a key ally that he knows he may not be able to salvage his candidacy if he cannot convince the public in the coming days that he is up for the job after a disastrous debate performance last week.

The president, who the ally emphasized is still deeply in the fight for re-election, understands that his next few appearances heading into the holiday weekend — including an interview scheduled for Friday with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News and campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — must go well.

A couple of “safe space” appearances? That’s a pretty low bar for a Juiced Up Joe to clear.

Donald Trump has mocked Joe Biden for his apparent change in complexion on Monday after appearing ghostly white at last week’s presidential debate.

The former president posted a photo of Mr Biden, in which he appeared markedly more bronzed for a statement about the Supreme Court presidential immunity ruling from the White House.

Joe Biden’s infirmities and their contributions to the president’s maladroit performance have imposed a paradox on the country. The Democratic Party has been reduced to making the negative case for Biden — not that he is a particularly adept president or that his presence in the Oval Office is desirable in itself, but that he is a better steward of the executive branch than Donald Trump. That wouldn’t be a remarkable strategy for an unpopular incumbent save the fact that the incumbent and his movement increasingly mirror all that they despise about Trump.

It is time for Joe Biden, the president of the United States, to submit to a medical assessment performed by a group of independent doctors, doctors who are given carte blanche to release their findings. After Biden’s alarming performance at last week’s presidential debate, his stumbling over words, his inability to form a coherent argument, his slack jaw and blank stare, it became undeniable that something drastic had happened to the 81-year-old leader of the free world. It is time for the public to know what is wrong—and what isn’t wrong—with him.

Given their worship of power, what happens when Team Biden/Obama realizes this election is unwinnable?

On Friday, amid a full-on mutiny among the pundit class on the Democrat side after Joe Biden had validated the critique of half the country who already knew he was mentally unfit to serve as President of these united states, Barack Obama stepped up and all but proved that he’s really the man in charge of both the Democrat Party and probably the federal government as well.

Although many in the press called on President Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee after last week’s debate performance, decision makers are still waiting on polling that shows the depth of the damage Mr. Biden’s performance had on his standing with the public.

The press’s reaction to last week’s debate probably reached its apogee when the New York Times’s editorial board called on Mr. Biden to drop out of the race Friday.

I am beginning to wonder if matters are out of Jill Biden’s hands.

Anonymous sources “very close” to Biden allegedly witnessed “15, 20 occasions” over the last year and a half of the president’s mental decline that was put on display for the nation last week, according to legendary journalist Carl Bernstein.

Bernstein — credited with breaking the Watergate scandal alongside Bob Woodward, leading to President Richard Nixon’s impeachment in the 1970s — told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Monday that sources close to the aging commander-in-chief were no strangers to “that horror show that we witnessed” during Biden’s disastrous debate with former President Trump.
