For all its claims to being public spirited, the press is doing a remarkably execrable job of reporting the more relevant realities about illegal immigration, now that the U.S. border is open and a surge has followed.
Start with the entry of criminals.
In dismissing the possibility that the virus leaked from a lab, journalists betrayed their mission to seek the truth.
In February 2020, Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, asked a provocative question: Was there some relationship between COVID-19 emerging in the Chinese city of Wuhan and the fact that there’s a biochemical lab in the city that specializes in studying coronaviruses? Was it possible that this lab was studying an animal that carried the virus and failed to properly secure it?
“We don’t have evidence that this disease originated there,” Cotton said of the lab, “but because of China’s duplicity and dishonesty from the beginning, we need to at least ask the question to see what the evidence says, and China right now is not giving evidence on that question at all.”
Former Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best suggested that the media wasn’t honest about the “mostly peaceful protests” in Seattle’s “Capitol Hill Organized Protest” (CHOP zone), also briefly called the not-so-cool cool-sounding CHAZ, (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone).
As the “lab leak” theory regarding the origins of the Wuhan coronavirus gains credibility among scientists and in the press after being previously demonized, some aren’t ready to let go: The New York Times’ leading COVID-19 beat reporter, Apoorva Mandavilli, showed Wednesday morning that she’s unfit for her job with a tweet suggesting that even investigating the possibility the Wuhan coronavirus did not originate at a “wet market” but escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology was racist.
Until very recently, any suggestion of the possibility that a lab leak led to the COVID-19 pandemic would be struck down by many media outlets as a “conspiracy theory.”
After increased calls for more investigation into the origin of the virus, a game-changer came on May 26 when U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement saying the U.S. Intelligence Community is divided on whether the virus emerged from a natural source or a lab accident, and there is still no definitive conclusion.
As soon as COVID-19 appeared in Wuhan, China, it was a high possibility that the virus originated in one of the two high-security labs studying bat viruses in that city — the National Bio-Safety Laboratory and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology was of particular concern. U.S. State Department cables in 2018 warned of extreme sloppiness at the lab. Although the lab’s research on bat coronaviruses was partially funded by the U.S. National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (of which Anthony Fauci is the director), the warnings went unaddressed.
Ratings from Neilsen Media Research reported Tuesday indicated that CNN lost 67% of its total viewers since January, when Donald Trump left the White House.
Americans in the heartland only believe this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests turned 2020 into a uniquely violent year, because they “live in a Fox News/Newsmax/OAN bubble,” where stations played the same “violent outbreaks on a loop,” according to MSNBC and the New York Times.
The Atlantic’s David Frum appears to be first out of the gate in what will likely become a coordinated, aggressive media campaign to defend the people and institutions that got the COVID-19 origin story wrong — and absolve them of all responsibility, however complicit they might be — and instead blame it all on Trump and his supporters.
It sounds stupid, I know, but it’s true. Frum thinks Trump and his tens of millions of supporters “are not interested in weighing the evidence” of the virus’s origins, and only want “payback for the political and cultural injuries inflicted on them by the scientists.” The whole thing, for them, is just “a weapon in a culture war here at home.”

Once, long ago, in a land far away, the best journalists tried to stand aloof from the stories they reported. The idea was simple and powerful. If journalists tried to be neutral and kept their reporting separate from their opinions, analysis, and speculation, then the public would believe them.
Those days are long gone — and the media’s credibility is gone with them. Journalists and media organizations are now smack in the middle of many stories they cover, in part because they want to be. They want to spin them, to set ‘the Narrative’.
Here’s a rule of thumb: If the mainstream media is selling it, you shouldn’t be buying it. Nowhere is that made clearer than with the way the media shilled for Rebekah Jones, who claimed to be a data analyst who caught Florida governor Ron DeSantis faking his state’s COVID statistics and was then fired for and harassed about her whistleblowing. Because Jones managed to tar both a rising Republican star and Donald Trump (all bad COVID news in 2020 tarred Trump), the media couldn’t get enough of her. It turned out, though, that Jones was a grifter and a felon.
