Trump Derangement Syndrome

In Bob Dylan’s criminally overlooked 2003 cinematic masterpiece, “Masked and Anonymous,” a newspaper editor tells a reporter: “I will tell you this, there is a story there… Make something out of it. And if you can’t do that, sir, then — make it up!” It’s advice that actual journalists today all too often follow. Sometimes, however, they get caught, as PBS just was.

Three weeks ago, Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe angrily pushed back on senators’ calls to immediately fire or discipline key agents directly responsible for the security failures that led to the assassination attempt against former President Trump at last month’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Since that time, Secret Service leaders have placed several members of the Pittsburgh Field Office on administrative leave, according to three sources in the Secret Service community.

With the Harris candidacy, any fig leaf that a candidate Clinton or Biden may have offered of “moderation” falls away.

As the DNC meets in Chicago this week to formally anoint its selected presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, consider the unexpected pass that the “Never Trump” phenomenon — comprised of apostate Republicans and self-described conservatives — has come to.

Just before Donald Trump held a rally in Doral, Fla., on July 9, Secret Service officials delivered his campaign a message: The former president and his advisers would notice additional security because the U.S. government had credible intelligence of threats against him.

“The bad guys are at it again,” an adviser said, describing the Secret Service’s message.

Donald Trump is going to be sentenced to prison. It’s absurd, it’s unjust, and it’s another body blow to the idea that America is a free republic where dissent is not just tolerated, but welcomed, and any man can get justice, no matter the color of his skin, contents of his wallet, or nature of his political opinions. All that is dead now, or dying, and even though Trump is unlikely actually to serve time, the sentence is coming as inevitably as fall follows summer.

Famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes would often note “’When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

Applying this same logic to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, it is obvious they tried to put an end to this pesky threat to their power.
