Let the morally and financially bankrupt UN perish

“Imminent financial collapse,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres hysterically predicted in a Jan. 29 letter to all UN member states, saying his reputationally challenged organization is so cash-strapped that it will run out of money by July, close its iconic Manhattan headquarters in August and cancel its annual General Assembly meeting in September.

Most UN functions, including its Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which claims to coordinate responses to global emergencies, may also sunset in the coming months due to lack of funds.

This gushing cavalcade of good news sounds more like a promise than a warning.

Why Canada should make a bid to host the United Nations headquarters

Donald Trump’s assault on the United Nations continues. Last Wednesday, he signed an executive order pulling the United States out of 31 UN bodies or agreements, in addition to another 35 that work closely with it.

These 66 entities do crucial work promoting world order and global well-being. They include the Framework Convention on Climate Change – the only truly global effort to prevent catastrophic overheating of the planet – as well as the International Law Commission, the Peacebuilding Commission, the UN Conference on Trade and Development, offices dedicated to fighting child soldiery, violence against children, sexual violence in conflict, and so on.

Epping migrant hotel to close following weeks of protest after resident was charged with sexual assault

Migrants are set to be moved out of a controversial asylum hotel after a council was granted a injunction to shut it down.

Council leaders won the first stage of their battle close the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, on planning permission grounds after it became an epicentre of anti-immigration protests, including some which turned violent.

The demonstrations were sparked when a migrant living at the hotel was charged with a series of sexual offences, including some against a 14-year-old girl.

A victory but a small one, the UK needs new leaders, more Trump less 3rd world chump.

The UN Calls for Israel to Rid Itself of Nuclear Weapons

The United Nations has decided that Israel needs to get rid of its nuclear weapons — if indeed it has any. But the organization has nothing to say about Iran.

In a 152-5 vote on Friday, the UN’s General Assembly voted to have Israel dispose of its nuclear weapons and place any nuclear sites within its borders under the watchful eye of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The dissenting votes were from the United States, Canada, Israel, Micronesia, and Palau. Twenty-three nations and the European Union abstained.

Canada planning for global food emergency, as Ukraine attack risks wheat supply

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked major disruptions to a United Nations program that helps prevent hunger around the world, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned Monday during a trip to Europe aimed at working with allies to respond to the crisis.

“The challenge right now of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, is having ripple effects around the world, not just in energy prices for Canadians and for people in Europe, but for people in the global South as well,” Trudeau said Monday in London, adding that those include disruption to the UN World Food Program.

UN rights body debates ‘systematic discrimination’ in Israel and Palestine

UN rights body debates ‘systematic discrimination’ in Israel and Palestine

The UN’s main human rights body is to meet to discuss launching an investigation into “systematic discrimination and repression” in Israel and Palestine, with the aim of identifying what it said were the root causes of recent Gaza bloodshed.

A draft proposal that calls for unprecedented levels of scrutiny of alleged abuses, called at the request of Muslim states, will be put before the 47-member UN human rights council on Thursday.

Opening the session in Geneva, the UN rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, said Israel’s attacks on Gaza this month could constitute war crimes if they were found to be disproportionate, and accused Hamas of firing indiscriminate rockets on Israel.

And they’ll be completely transparent and impartial!
