The belief that aliens have visited Earth and may even live among us is not a new concept; it has persisted for centuries. But now this notion is gaining unprecedented traction in the U.S. and abroad, raising concerns about its potential impact on society.

In the U.S., belief in UFO sightings as evidence of alien life has surged from 20 percent in 1996 to 34 percent in 2022, with 24 percent of Americans reporting they have seen a UFO, according to a 2022 YouGov poll of 1,000 U.S. adult citizens. In short, this belief is no longer confined to the fringes.

“Two possibilities exist,” physicist and science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke once wrote. “Either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” Chinese science-fiction author Liu Cixin begs to differ. In his mind-bending trilogy Remembrance of Earth’s Past, adapted by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss as 3 Body Problem for Netflix, he convincingly argues that we’d be better off if we were alone in the universe and, barring that, that we should hide from whoever or whatever might be out there.

Remembrance of Earth’s Past divides the history of humanity into two halves: before and after first contact with an intelligent alien civilization. It tells a fictionalized history of that second half, from the moment of first contact until 17 billion years after the beginning of time.

A powerfully built man who served in the US military in Afghanistan and Kuwait, and also ran anti-terrorism missions against Islamic State, Al Qaeda and Lebanese militants Hezbollah, Luis Elizondo doesn’t seem like the type to scare easily.

However, even he admits his ‘blood ran cold’ when his children reported seeing a green, glowing orb hovering in the air near them inside their family home in Maryland outside Washington DC.

The three-dimensional ball was ‘translucent and suffused with an eerie green light’ and ‘behaved as if guided by some intelligence’, stopping dead still in the air before drifting off down a hallway and disappearing. Elizondo says on another occasion he saw the same thing – a glowing green object, the size of a basketball and with ‘soft edges that weren’t defined’ floating slowly from their kitchen to his bedroom door just below ceiling height before disappearing into a wall.

A new book by Luis Elizondo, a former Pentagon official, doubles down on persistent allegations of secret government UFO activities. On July 26, 2023, Navy pilot Ryan Graves, Navy Commander David Fravor and former Air Force intelligence officer David Grusch testified at a Congressional hearing heard around the world.

It was a “profound moment” for former Pentagon official Lue Elizondo to hear Grusch speak publicly about an alleged “multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse engineering program.”

“You had three military personnel testifying on the reality of UAP,” Elizondo said. “Now that’s historic.”

Harald Malmgren, who served under John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, made the eyebrow-raising claim about the alleged conversation with CIA officer Richard Bissell in a viral post on X this week.

“Sixty-plus years ago I was provided highest level classifications to lead DOD (Department of Defence) work on nuclear weapons and antimissile defense,” Mr Malmgren wrote.

I Investigated UAPs at the Pentagon—Americans Can Handle the Truth

I’m Luis Elizondo, a former senior intelligence official with the United States government. Currently, I continue to provide advice and assistance to the U.S. government while also publicly advocating for increased transparency and disclosure regarding the topic of UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena).

I was never particularly interested in UFOs or science fiction. My background is in science—I graduated from the University of Miami with majors in microbiology and immunology, with studies in parasitology.

The scientific method has always been one of my core tenets. After my time in the Army, I served as a special agent in counterintelligence, investigating terrorism, espionage, and other serious crimes. I’ve always been a fact and rule-based person.

The U.S. Air Force’s Plant 42 in California, America’s premier hub for advanced aerospace development work, especially highly classified military programs, has seen a wave of mysterious drone incursions in recent months. The incidents have now become serious enough to prompt the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose new, if temporary flight restrictions around the sprawling high-security facility. The Air Force acknowledged these incidents in response to our questions about purported sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in the area which became viral on social media over the weekend and that local law enforcement appears to have received no reports about.

Roswell was just the beginning.

The 1947 UFO incident that rocked a small city in New Mexico and shocked the world was followed by a less famous but perhaps even more damning event six years later — with recently-leaked government texts appearing to shed new light on the night in question.

In the partially redacted communication, shared on social media, a top-ranking intelligence official notes that the public would be “slack-jawed” to know the entire truth.

Two British intelligence officials were sent to a classified international summit about UFOs at the Pentagon, it has emerged, despite the UK Ministry of Defence claiming to have had no interest in the subject since 2009.

The UFO community are convinced that world governments know more than they are letting on about the existence of aliens while governments have taken an interest in examining the phenomenon of UFOs after several unexplained sightings.

They keep telling us there’s nothing to see so what is it they keep seeing?

For millennia, humans have seen inexplicable things in the sky. Some have been beautiful, some have been terrifying, and some — like auroras and solar eclipses before they were understood scientifically — have been both. Today’s aircraft, balloons, drones, satellites and more only increase the chances of spotting something confounding overhead.

In the United States, unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, came into the national spotlight in the late 1940s and early ’50s. A series of incidents, including a supposedly crashed alien spaceship near Roswell, N.M., generated something of an American obsession. The Roswell UFO turned out to be part of a classified program, the remnants of a balloon monitoring the atmosphere for signs of clandestine Russian nuclear tests. But it and other reported sightings prompted the U.S. government to launch various projects and panels to investigate such claims, as Science News reported in 1966 (SN: 10/22/66), as well as kicking off hobby groups and conspiracy theories.

As my many skeptical readers understand (I hope) I am not trying to convince anyone. I am simply asking you to tag along with my own interest and who knows maybe we’ll all learn something.

The Phoenix Lights event – a mass sighting of a UFO is as compelling as any evidence I am aware of that something’s happening here, and what it is ain’t exactly clear.
