On July 11, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) reintroduced the most extraordinary legislation in American history. The Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act alleges that shadowy elements of the U.S. government have surreptitiously operated “legacy programs” that retrieve and seek to reverse-engineer UFOs of “unknown” or “non-human” origin.

As a remedy, the Disclosure Act would establish a blue-ribbon review board to gradually and strategically release long-withheld UFO-related records publicly via a “controlled disclosure campaign.”

The year is 1950. Physicist Enrico Fermi is eating lunch with a few colleagues outside Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. His shirt ripples in a hot desert wind.

He looks up at the sky and reportedly says, “Where is everybody?”

He is talking about space aliens. Known as the Fermi paradox, the question still hasn’t been answered. Despite numerous anecdotal reports, there is no convincing evidence of alien life or technology within our solar system (or, for that matter, in the cosmos at large).

Large Language Models with Artificial Intelligence (AI) are neural networks whose hardware is very different from the human brain. They consume giga-Watts of power instead of tens of Watts, they are made of silicon instead of spongy flesh and blood, and their artificial neurons transmit signals at the speed of light. Such signals would have traveled 150 kilometers during the half-millisecond it takes neurotransmitter molecules to travel between synapses in the million-times smaller brain. These material differences suggest that AI systems represent an alien intelligence. Sure, we can do our best to align AI with humans through extensive training and supervision, but in the long run this attempt might look like putting lipstick on a pig.

A former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer told Congress last summer about a government program that retrieves and reverse engineers unidentified flying objects.

The Mexican Congress held an unprecedented session in September during which supposed mummies were presented as “nonhuman beings that are not part of our terrestrial evolution.”

And NASA now has a director of research for unidentified flying objects, or what it calls “unidentified anomalous phenomena.”

As the new series of the BBC’s Paranormal looks into alleged UFO sightings, one aerospace expert says accessible, modern technology puts us in a stronger position than ever to work out what’s going on in the skies above us.

It was a rainy day in Pembrokeshire in February 1977 when a group of pupils from Broad Haven Primary School claimed to see an unidentified flying object (UFO) outside.

David Davies, who was just 10 at the time, remembers his fellow students coming inside throughout the day “trying to alert the headmaster that there was something strange going on”.

An unidentified, technologically advanced population could be living secretly on Earth.

That startling claim was made in a new paper by researchers at Harvard and Montana Technological University. They speculate that “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP), another term for UFOs, could be living underground, on the moon or even walking among humans.

The researchers acknowledge in the paper their hypotheses may be regarded skeptically by the general scientific community, but they still deserve “consideration in a spirit of epistemic humility and openness.”

A Freedom of Information request has revealed the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is currently researching how it will react to the so-called ‘black swan’ event that is discovering extraterrestrial life, including announcing the find to the public.

A black swan event is an unpredictable event that has wide-ranging consequences, but in hindsight appears to have been inevitable.

Much is being written today about the disruptive impact of drones in modern warfare. Rightly so, because these small, inexpensive, and highly capable devices are transforming military operations. They are accurate and effective; hard to identify or intercept; and can be operated with minimal infrastructure or training. A single soldier today can operate an eye in the sky or conduct his own bombing mission. As we are seeing in Russia and Ukraine, new drone uses, applications, and capabilities are rapidly advancing while the defense struggles to catch up.

It is therefore not surprising to see footage of fallen soldiers and destroyed armored vehicles that succumbed to drone attacks. Even the mighty Russian Black Sea Fleet, a massive investment of resources and manpower, has suffered humiliating defeats and been neutralized by a relatively tiny investment in guided missiles and small drone watercraft packed with explosives.
