Oxford Union president-elect who ‘celebrated’ the death of Charlie Kirk is ousted after vote of no confidence

The controversial President-elect of the Oxford Union has been dramatically sacked following outrage over his remarks over the death of right-wing US influencer Charlie Kirk.

A resounding vote of no confidence by the membership of the prestigious debating society in George Abaraonye resulted in a more than 2:1 majority, with 1,228 votes in favour and only 501 against, well beyond the two-thirds majority needed to force his resignation.

The 70 per cent no confidence majority means he will be deemed to have resigned, effectively having been sacked after calling the vote himself to try and shore up his support.

Lamborghini swerves away from all-electric future

The boss of Lamborghini has said its customers still want “the sound and the emotion” of internal combustion engines, and the company will use them in its cars for at least the next decade.

Speaking to the BBC at the Italian supercar-maker’s London showroom, chief executive Stephan Winkelmann said enthusiasm for electric cars was declining – creating an opportunity to focus on hybrid power instead.

Michael Kovrig: Don’t buy the gaslighting, China’s intentions towards Canada are hostile

China’s officials are sweet-talking Canadians. Its Ambassador, Wang Di, has given smiling interviews calling for the two countries to “have a correct perception of each other.” His other catchphrases include “mutual respect,” “win-win cooperation,” and “positive energy.” Appearing recently on CTV’s Question Period, he assured that current trade disputes would disappear if only Canada would drop its tariffs.

Polyamorous parenting is coming our way, if we don’t watch out

IN Montreal a ‘throuple’ of three polyamorous men have adopted a three-year-old girl.

The men are seeking to have all three of them recognised as her legal parents. Their bid comes hard on the heels of a bizarre ruling in Quebec in April ordering the Civil Code to allow more than two legal parents.

For what possible reason? You may well ask. It is this: capping ‘filiation’ at two parents sends the message that only ‘so-called “normal” families, with a maximum of two parents, represent family structures that are valid and worthy of legal recognition’.

Trump to award Charlie Kirk a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom

Speaking at the Pentagon on Thursday morning for memorial services marking the 24th anniversary of the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks, Donald Trump said he would be awarding rightwing activist and close ally Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on Wednesday, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Kirk was a “giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people”, Trump said. “Our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Erika and his beautiful children, fantastic people they are. We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”

Why Venezuelan F-16s buzzing US warships prove Trump right

First the boat, then the buzz. On Tuesday, an American strike in the Caribbean shredded a vessel ferrying narcotics out of Venezuela, killing eleven alleged members of the Tren de Aragua gang – which Caracas, strategically, dismissed as an AI hallucination. Two days later, Nicolás Maduro tried his own spectacle, dispatching a pair of F-16s to roar over the USS Jason Dunham, one of the U.S. destroyers recently sent on a counter-narcotics patrol off Venezuela’s coast.

The maneuvers – and the steady drumbeat of pressure that preceded them – have regime-changers daydreaming about intervention and restrainers losing sleep. But before mistaking the noise for reality, it’s worth asking: what is Washington trying to achieve?

The Famine That Wasn’t: How the UN, Media and Hamas Waged a War of Disinformation

Since the invasion of Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the international media, humanitarian organizations, and UN-affiliated agencies have relentlessly pushed one of the most damaging blood libels in history: that Israel is deliberately starving the people of the Gaza Strip. In headline after headline, and through “official” UN reports and viral images, the world has been told that Gaza teeters on the edge of famine — or that famine has already taken hold. However, these warnings, loudly declared, have repeatedly failed to materialize.

Trump said he covered “a lot of territory” in his talk with Zelenskyy, saying the day had been successful thus far.

North Koreans say they are being sent to work ‘like slaves’ in Russia

North Korea and Soviet Union BFF’s Forever

Thousands of North Koreans are being sent to work in slave-like conditions in Russia to fill a huge labour shortage exacerbated by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the BBC has learned.

Moscow has repeatedly turned to Pyongyang to help it fight the war, using its missiles, artillery shells and its soldiers.

Now, with many of Russia’s men either killed or tied up fighting – or having fled the country – South Korean intelligence officials have told the BBC that Moscow is increasingly relying on North Korean labourers.

Trump drops ceasefire demand for Ukraine war after summit with Putin

KYIV — President Donald Trump said Saturday that Ukraine and Russia should go straight to agreeing on a final peace deal, dropping his demand for a ceasefire in a dramatic reversal that aligns him with Russian President Vladimir Putin hours after their summit in Alaska.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with the backing of European leaders, has insisted that a ceasefire must be in place before any negotiations to end the war. In the run-up to the summit, European officials had expressed guarded optimism that the United States was aligning with them after Trump had earlier pushed for a ceasefire. Zelensky said Saturday he would be traveling to Washington to discuss the summit with Trump.
