It’s time to become the 51st state of the US

We need to get Brexit done properly. Let’s finally face up to reality and put our Maga hats on

‘The Briton… should cheerfully acquiesce in the decree of Destiny, and stand in betimes with the conquering American.” So said William Thomas Stead, the prominent Victorian newspaperman and strident reformer.

Stead looked at Britain’s colonial apotheosis with apprehension, understanding that the growth of new great powers meant “we can never again be the first”. As his countrymen grew fat and complacent on the spoils of imperial decadence, Stead saw clearly that the only avoidance of incipient decline would come by uniting our fortunes with those who had passed us in the great race.

After the USS Gettysburg Misfire, Can We Talk About TWA 800?

On Sunday, December 22, a US Navy guided-missile cruiser, the USS Gettysburg, mistakenly shot down an American fighter jet over the Red Sea. This was not the first incident of friendly fire by the U.S. Navy, nor the most tragic.

On Sunday morning, July 3, 1988, at the tail end of the Iran-Iraq War, an Aegis cruiser in the Persian Gulf, the USS Vincennes, fired two Standard Missiles at a commercial Iranian Airbus, IR 655. Captain Will Rogers III and his crew had mistaken the ascending passenger jet with 290 people on board for a descending Iranian F-14, a fighter plane.

Progressive policies are fuelling rise in New York subway murders

This year will go down as the deadliest in the New York City subways in decades, if not ever. The indescribably savage immolation of a woman passenger on the morning of December 22 brings the number of murders in the subway in 2024 to 11. Since 2020, 40 people have been murdered in the system, more than the total number dating back to 1990.

Images of the scene from Sunday morning are ghastly. A human figure is engulfed in flames while a man, eventually identified as the killer, sits calmly watching a few yards away. The murderer, an illegal migrant from Guatemala, evidently used a lighter to set his victim’s clothes aflame. He was caught later that day, snoozing on another train.

FBI found evidence Covid was lab leak but was not allowed to brief President, claims bioweapons expert

The FBI found evidence suggesting that Covid-19 was caused by a lab leak but were not allowed to brief the president, it has been claimed.

Jason Bannan, a doctor of microbiology and former senior scientist at the FBI, has dedicated more than a year of his life to discovering the origins of Covid.

But despite being the only US national intelligence agency to conclude that a lab leak was likely, the FBI and Mr Bannan were snubbed from a National Intelligence Council briefing with Joe Biden, it has been claimed.

Q&A: Why Alberta Premier Danielle Smith sided with Trump about border issues in trade spat

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s 2024 was a year of following through on her promises — from health-care reforms to support for the oil and gas industry — even as her opponents fought her ideas.

In a year-end interview at the legislature in early December, Smith reflected on a few pressing issues.

The Alberta government’s next steps, she said, will be revealed in the provincial budget, set to be tabled on Feb. 27.

Trump’s Re-election Defines a New Era of American Politics

Rombama

When Barack Obama won re-election in 2012, it seemed to mark the beginning of a new era of Democratic dominance, one propelled by the rise of a new generation of young, secular and nonwhite voters.

With hindsight, the 2012 election looks more like the end of an era: the final triumph of the social movements of the 1960s over the once-dominant Reagan Republicans.

Instead, it’s the three Trump elections — in 2016, 2020 and 2024 — that look as if they have the makings of a new era of politics, one defined by Donald J. Trump’s brand of conservative populism.

Thank God that moment passed.

Tom Homan Shreds Kathy Hochul Over ‘Tone-Deaf’ Post After Illegal Immigrant Sets Subway Passenger on Fire

Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, did not mince words during a recent interview in which he blasted New York Gov. Kathy Hochul over a “tone-deaf” social media post she wrote shortly after the news broke about an illegal immigrant setting a woman on fire in a New York City subway.

Manifest Destiny 2.0? Trump wants Greenland, threatens Panama, chides Canada

While president-elect Donald Trump hasn’t declared Manifest Destiny as his rationale for wishing to expand American territory beyond its present boundaries, he very well might.

Readers with even a basic understanding of U.S. history will know about Manifest Destiny — the doctrine that the democratic administration of President James Polk relied on to expand continental U.S. beyond the 26 states of the early 1800s. The rationale marked America’s belief in itself as exceptional — a republic, no longer colonies of a monarchy — destined to expand across the North American continent.

As Trudeau battles political crisis, Canada’s regional leaders court Trump to avert trade war

Although Canada faces a major trade war with the US as soon as president-elect Donald Trump enters office in less than a month, Justin Trudeau has been distracted by a leadership crisis that could topple him as prime minister.

The situation has Canada’s regional leaders hopping on flights to influence the incoming Trump administration themselves.

Tougher Canadian border security may not appease Trump’s tariff threat, John Bolton says

Cracking down on border security may not spare Canada from Donald Trump’s promised 25-per-cent tariffs, his former White House national security adviser says.

John Bolton warns that Mr. Trump is serious about the tariffs because he sees them as good economic policy and not just a negotiating tactic. Last month, the president-elect threatened to impose the taxes against Canada and Mexico until the two countries stop migrants and fentanyl from crossing into the U.S.

Why Does Trump Continue His ‘51st State’ Taunt of Canada?

Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has continually referred to Canada as the 51st state while calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a “governor” since their meeting at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Nov. 29.

“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump wrote on social media on Dec. 18, one of his latest comments repeating the taunt.
