Transatlantic Tensions Surge After X Fine and Harsh New U.S. Security Strategy

Relations between the United States and the European Union appear somewhat fraught after two Friday announcements triggered outrage on both sides of the Atlantic.

First, Brussels imposed a €120 million fine on the social-media platform X—and its owner Elon Musk personally—for breaching transparency rules of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, called the fine “an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.”

The Right Questions about America’s Strikes on Venezuelan Narco-Boats

In the Caribbean, we should worry about what is decent and smart, not about what activists say is lawful.

nce again, the United States is using lethal force off its shores. In recent weeks, American drones and warships have sunk or disabled a string of speedboats in international waters off Venezuela. Washington says the vessels belonged to narcoterrorist networks tied to the Maduro regime and Tren de Aragua and that they were carrying cocaine and fentanyl precursors bound for the United States. At least 83 alleged traffickers and others are dead. Caracas calls this extrajudicial murder. Human-rights groups call it assassination. Cable-news panels and UN press releases are already rehearsing the same ritual question: Is this legal under international law?

Taking out the garbage in Minnesota

President Trump has had enough. A majority of Americans have had enough of Ilhan Omar’s ingratitude.

So last week, Trump minced no words. He came straight out and called her “garbage,” and then called “her friends” also garbage.

No doubt he was referring to her fellow Somalis out there in Minneapolis who number at around 100,000, and do nothing “but complain,” according to Trump.

Trump Offers Europe Tough Love: Defend Yourself Within Two Years

‘The days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over,’ the president’s new Security Strategy says.

Europe should have the soldiers and equipment to defend itself two years from now, by the end of 2027. That is the gist of President Trump’s Security Strategy, released yesterday.

“The days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over,” reads the strategy document that sets the parameters for the second Trump term. Earlier this year, in face of Trump Administration impatience with Europe, the European Union set a target of making the continent ready to defend itself by 2030. With major shortfalls in air defense, cyber warfare, intelligence and drones, many analysts warned  the goal was over ambitious.

Trump forced Canada to scrap its digital services tax — but did he save Carney from bad policy?

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Prime Minister Mark Carney rescinded Canada’s digital services tax (DST), a three per cent levy on digital services revenue from large domestic and foreign businesses, in June after President Donald Trump threatened to halt trade talks if the tax took effect. The repeal was a strategic move to restart stalled negotiations with the United States, which soon resumed after Carney’s announcement but were again disrupted later … by a Ronald Reagan ad. Despite removing the DST to ease tensions, Carney has little to show for it.

Like Trump, Benjamin Franklin Sought to Annex Canada

After Madelaine Drohan left a long and distinguished career in journalism for graduate studies in history, she took on a largely forgotten aspect of the relationship between Canada and the United States. The result was her recently published book, “He Did Not Conquer: Benjamin Franklin’s Failure to Annex Canada.”

My conversation with Madelaine, who is now a senior fellow at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, has been edited for length and clarity.

The New Monroe Doctrine: Trump’s New National Security Strategy Is All I’ve Ever Wanted

Welcome to “The New Monroe Doctrine,” where I give you an update on what’s going on in the Western Hemisphere, south of our border, especially as it relates to the United States.

I had something else planned to write about for this column today — specifically how some Latin American countries are handling mass migration much better than Europe — but Donald Trump released his new National Security Strategy in the last 24 hours, and upon reading it, I got a little giddy. Don’t judge. I love this stuff.

Raking In Hundreds Of Millions For Trafficking Kids Destroys U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Credibility On Immigration

Earlier this week, Anna Gallagher, executive director of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc. (CLINIC) crooned: “As we enter the Advent season, we remember that the Holy Family themselves were migrants seeking safety.” It is a recurring motif to validate the resistance of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to curtailment of illegal immigration.

In November, the USCCB prepared for Advent by declaring war on the Trump administration with a “Special Pastoral Message on Immigration.” The insurrectionist tenor of this rare “special message” places the globalist conceits — and monetary interests — of the hierarchy ahead of the just laws of their own country.

‘Holding my breath:’ Fear in Ottawa after Trump tirade against Somali immigrants

Somali Canadians living in Ottawa have condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s tirade against Somali immigrants and their country, saying it has stoked fear and concern within the local community.

Trump’s invective came during a cabinet meeting Tuesday, soon after reports that federal authorities were preparing a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota focused on Somalis living illegally in the U.S.

Trump called Somali immigrants “garbage” who “contribute nothing” to the U.S. and said “I don’t want them in our country.”

You have to read this LA Times Story – U.S. Proves Bewildering for Somali Refugees

“… In their three-bedroom home in a working-class neighborhood, Lamungu, his wife, mother and six children are learning the most rudimentary basics of American life. How to use mouthwash. Toothpaste. Deodorant. They have been taught, but frequently get the items confused: A stick of deodorant is placed next to cereal boxes in the kitchen; mouthwash is hard to distinguish from dish soap.

One day, they thought they were locked in their apartment because they forgot how to unlock the door. A car trip means passing out bags to the children because they get sick from the new motion. The family had to be told to take their own garbage out; they saw their neighbor’s trash bag and decided to add their trash to it.”

Somali fraud in Minnesota is the ‘biggest theft of taxpayer dollars in US HISTORY’, White House says

Somali refugees in Minnesota have committed the ‘biggest theft of taxpayer dollars in US history’ and local Democratic officials were ‘fully complicit’ in the scheme, White House officials declared Friday night.

Federal authorities announced this week that at least 86 people – mostly within small Somali communities in the state – have stolen more than $1 billion in public funds from programs meant to feed children, assist the homeless and provide autism therapy.

The suspects allegedly ran companies that billed Minnesota state officials for millions of dollars in social services that were never actually rendered in three separate fraud schemes.

This is quite a read …

Is the HiLux Coming to America?

President Trump appeared to say that Americans are going to be allowed — isn’t it great? — to buy small, inexpensive vehicles that are not currently available for sale in America, because it is illegal to sell them in America. Models such as the little pickup made by Toyota — the HiLux — being one of them. Also, the so-called “Kei” cars, which are abundant in Japan but unavailable here.

Canadians say selecting the best fighter jet for the job matters more than jobs: Nanos

As the Canadian government reviews its commitment to purchase American-made Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, a new poll shows what Canadians think should be prioritized in procuring replacements to the aging CF-18s.

The CTV News and Nanos Research survey gauged Canadian’s views on what matters the most to them in terms of defence cooperation, in light of ongoing trade tensions with the U.S. and a pitch from Swedish manufacturer of the Gripen fighter jet, SAAB, to bring up to 10,000 manufacturing and research jobs to Canada if Ottawa adds the aircraft to its military fleet.

Trump administration will expand travel ban to more than 30 countries, Noem says

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration will be expanding its ban on travel for citizens of certain countries to more than 30, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, in the latest restriction to come since a man from Afghanistan was accused of shooting two National Guard members.

The expansion would build on a travel ban already announced in June by the Republican administration, which barred travel to the U.S. for citizens from 12 countries and restricted access to the U.S. for people from seven others. In a social media post earlier this week, Noem had suggested more countries would be included.
