US tells Europe it must take over ‘the majority’ of NATO’s defence capabilities by 2027 as Trump shifts American military focus

The United States wants Europe to take over the majority of NATO’s defense capabilities by 2027, Pentagon officials told diplomats in Washington this week.

The message, recounted by five sources familiar with the discussion, including a US official, was conveyed at a meeting in Washington this week of Pentagon staff overseeing NATO policy and several European delegations.

The shifting of this burden from the US to European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would dramatically change how the United States, a founding member of the post-war alliance, works with its most important military partners.

Critics question Saab’s offer to bring 10,000 aerospace jobs to Canada

OTTAWA – Critics are questioning the solidity of Saab’s pitch to deliver 10,000 jobs in Canada if it decides to set up shop here to assemble Gripen fighter jets.

The Swedish company has said little about how it came to that number, making it hard to evaluate the offer.

Saab spokesperson Jenny Gerdes said the estimate reflects the “scale of work” the company anticipates bringing to the country, “should the Gripen be selected.”

“The figure is based on projected global demand for Gripen and the corresponding production, sustainment and R&D activities Canada would undertake,” Gerdes said in an email.

Canada must admit that Trump’s America is not a ‘safe’ place for refugees

Since its inception in 2004, the legitimacy of the Safe Third Country Agreement has always been predicated on the convenient fiction that the United States offers refugee claimants the same protections as Canada provides to asylum seekers who arrive in this country.

Even before Donald Trump became U.S. President for the first time in 2016, concerns about the treatment of those who claim refugee status in the U.S. cast long shadows over the bilateral agreement under which Canada turns back most asylum seekers from third countries who try to enter this country at the U.S. border. Successive governments in Ottawa have largely glossed over those concerns, reasoning that the U.S. refugee system, while imperfect, met minimum standards set out in international conventions.
