N.S. sex worker going to small claims court over non-payment

A sex worker in Nova Scotia is pursuing a claim for non-payment of services in small claims court, in a case she and her advocates will help shift the conversation about sex work in Canada.

The woman at the centre of the case said she spent an evening with a client in January 2022. Afterwards, she realized she wasn’t going to be paid when the PIN for the bank card he’d given her to withdraw money didn’t work.

To supporters, the protesters were “the most peaceful Canadian citizens ever to gather downtown.” Meanwhile, residents haunted by the sound of horns or the smell of diesel in their neighbourhoods described them as “white nationalists” and said they felt terrorized.

Trudeau’s deal covering repair of Russian-owned turbines is for a longer period than previously disclosed, sources say

The Canadian government’s deal to allow the repair of Russian-owned turbines covers a period of up to two years from now and would allow the import and re-export of up to six units – a far more extensive arrangement than had previously been disclosed.

Two government officials told The Globe and Mail on Tuesday that Global Affairs Canada granted the German industrial giant Siemens Energy an exemption under Canada’s Russia sanctions for two years. This allows the company to send turbines from Nord Stream 1, a pipeline majority-owned by Russian state controlled Gazprom, to Siemens Canada’s facilities in Montreal for regular repair and maintenance.

One of the officials stressed that the arrangement with Siemens allows the Canadian government to revoke the sanctions-relief permits at any time. The Globe is not identifying the officials, who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Quebec judge says Crown failed to prove Nazism led to Holocaust in hate speech trial

MONTREAL – The prosecution in the trial of a Montreal man accused of fomenting hatred against Jews failed to establish that the murder of Jews by the regime of Adolf Hitler was a consequence of Nazi ideology, a Quebec court judge said Friday.

The case involves Gabriel Sohier Chaput, 35, who faces one count of wilfully promoting hatred in connection with an article he has admitted to writing that was published in 2017 on the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer. The blog post included racist images and comments about Jews throughout, and the website displayed photos of Hitler and other images associated with Nazism.

Sask. cattle producers call for meat pricing investigation, transparency

meat and guns

Cattle producers in Saskatchewan want more transparency about who is profiting from beef sales.

They say meat packers and retailers are limiting supply to drive up prices.

“We know what retail prices are and we know what our farm gate prices are,” said Garner Deobald, who farms near Hodgeville, Sask. “There’s a lot of money that’s staying in the supply chain, but not coming back down to the grassroots.”

I don’t cook much any longer. If I do it’s chicken or fish, maybe pork. Steak? Way too dear for my budget.
