WHO to discuss declaring monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency

The World Health Organization convened its emergency committee Thursday to consider if the spiraling outbreak of monkeypox warrants being declared a global emergency. But some experts say the WHO’s decision to act only after the disease spilled into the West could entrench the grotesque inequities that arose between rich and poor countries during the coronavirus pandemic.

Perhaps yesterday’s news about the cop who was stopped from entering the school while his wife bled out inside was finally the straw that broke the camel’s back. Uvalde schools police Chief Pete Arredondo has been suspended from duty as of yesterday evening. The decision was made by the district school superintendent, but his explanations as to why Arredondo was suspended now and what the suspension means were vague at best.

‘Disgusting’: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Nixes Visit to Contemporary Art Festival Over Antisemitic Display

Germany’s federal chancellor has pulled out of a visit to a major contemporary art show in the city of Kassel in protest at the presence of crudely antisemitic images in a mural that was on display earlier this week.

A spokesperson for Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed on Thursday that the German leader had canceled a planned visit to the Documenta festival, which is staged in Kassel every five years. This year’s edition opened last weekend amid a storm of controversy over the support of its curators — an Indonesian artists’ collective called Ruangrupa — for the movement targeting the State of Israel with a comprehensive cultural and economic boycott.

The Navy veteran who plowed his car through a pedestrian-packed, midday Times Square in 2017 — telling a traffic cop afterwards, “I wanted to kill them” — will avoid jail time despite taking the life of an 18-year-old tourist in the rampage that also left 22 others injured.

That was the decision of a Manhattan jury Wednesday that deliberated just six hours before buying the insanity defense of Richard Rojas, 31, finding him “not responsible” due to mental illness.

Once-hot NFT collections tank alongside cryptocurrencies

Once-hot NFT collections, including the celebrity-backed Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunk series, have tanked alongside cryptocurrencies and the stock market, leaving many digital collectible investors deep in the hole.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club series — which has been endorsed by celebrities including Tom Brady, Madonna, Jimmy Fallon and Future — has seen its value crumble in recent months as the Federal Reserve hikes interest rates and the economy is squeezed by inflation.

I have no words to describe “NFT” mania.
