Liberals target Farm Credit Canada for being ‘too white’

The federal government is taking aim at Farm Credit Canada (FCC), saying the Crown-owned lender’s portfolio is dominated by “older white men” and needs to better reflect the country’s diversity.

In a budget notice, the Department of Finance said cabinet will amend the Farm Credit Canada Act to require regular legislative reviews ensuring the bank’s loans align with the “changing needs” of the agriculture sector.

Global Affairs says Canada exploring possible postwar role in Gaza Strip

OTTAWA — With Canadian military personnel already deployed to Gaza to monitor the ceasefire, the federal government says it’s scoping out how it can best support Palestinians in Gaza in the event a peace deal leads to self-governance.

“Decisions have not yet been made on the level of resources nor the type of assistance that we could provide,” Alexandre Lévêque, an assistant deputy minister at Global Affairs Canada, told the House of Commons foreign affairs committee Tuesday.

“The department is working on options to provide to the ministers and prime minister on where we can be most helpful. We have areas of expertise.”

So called ‘Canadian’ convicted in foiled NYC terror plot stabs US correctional officers in prison

A 27-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont., currently serving a US prison sentence for his role in a foiled 2016 terrorist plot, has pleaded guilty to stabbing two correctional officers with a weapon fashioned from a steel desk inside his cell.

The US Department of Justice confirmed Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy’s guilty plea in a news release Tuesday, detailing the Dec. 7, 2020, incident at United States Penitentiary Allenwood in Pennsylvania.

Russian comic fan is first jailed under Kremlin ‘Satanism’ ban

A man in St Petersburg who was arrested on his way to a comic book and fantasy festival has become the first person to be imprisoned under the Kremlin’s crackdown on supposed Satanism.

Artyom Repin was was detained on charges of possessing a goblet with a pentagram, an image of Baphomet, a goat-headed pagan deity, and a book called Satanic Rituals. He has been jailed for 12 days.
