Company building Toronto’s new electric ferries faces criminal corruption charges overseas

The shipbuilder awarded $92 million to construct Toronto’s two new electric ferries will soon face trial overseas on corruption charges and sanctions violations, a legal threat experts say could imperil the company.

The Netherlands Public Prosecution Service announced in April that it was prosecuting Damen, a major international shipbuilder headquartered in the Netherlands, for bribery, forgery and money-laundering. The service also said it was investigating the company for violating Russian sanctions.

Ford government faces questions about jobs fund and ‘adult entertainment venue’

Ontario’s opposition parties are questioning the province’s labour minister about the possibility money from the $2.5 billion Skills Development Fund ended up at a company tied to an “adult entertainment venue.”

Records viewed by CTV News show connections between an organization that received under $10 million in grants from the labour ministry and the operator of a new nightclub on Toronto’s exhibition grounds, though the people involved denied that provincial money was used there.

“Adult entertainment slash wedding venues? Can’t make this up!” declared Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles during Question Period on Tuesday, referring to the connection first reported by TheTrillium.ca.

Friedrich Merz says Syrians no longer have reason for asylum in Germany

Syrians no longer have reason to be granted asylum in Germany after the end of their country’s civil war, according to Friedrich Merz, who said they will instead be encouraged to return to help with the reconstruction of their homeland.

During Syria’s 14-year civil war, Germany took in more refugees than any other country in the EU, but the chancellor and others in his coalition cabinet argue that the situation has changed since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government 11 months ago.

Merz said late on Tuesday that he expected many of the more than 1 million Syrians living in Germany would voluntarily return home.

At least seven people were killed and 11 injured when a UPS plane crashed in a colossal, fiery explosion — leaving a long trail of flames and destruction — shortly after taking off from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, according to officials and wild footage.

Four people on the ground were killed and the three people who were onboard the flight are presumed dead, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said. The numbers were expected to grow as emergency crews combed the scene for additional victims through the night, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear warned.
