Canada ‘seriously’ considering high-speed rail link between Toronto and Quebec City: minister

The federal government is “seriously” considering building the country’s first high-speed rail link between Quebec City and Toronto, says Public Services and Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.

Ottawa announced plans back in 2021 to build what it called a “high-frequency” (HFR) rail corridor with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Laval and Quebec City. At the time, the government estimated the cost at between $6 billion and $12 billion.

Train wreck ahead. I can’t even imagine the scale of waste and graft that this boondoggle will generate.

Muslims convicted in U.S. of violating Iran sanctions, adopt new identities in Ontario

Brothers convicted in the United States of helping Iran evade sanctions were allowed to legally adopt new identities in Ontario, records released to Global News show.

Amin and Arash Yousefijam were sentenced in Michigan in the fall of 2021 for using shell companies to illegally export sensitive manufacturing equipment to Iran, where they were born.

Americans are revolting against McDonald’s and fast-food chains. That’s hurting french fry suppliers like Lamb Weston.

Lamb Weston, the largest producer of french fries in North America and a major supplier to fast-food chains, restaurants and grocery stores, is closing a production plant in Washington state. The company announced last week that it would lay off nearly 400 employees, or 4% of its workforce, and temporarily cut production lines in response to slowing customer demand.

Customer traffic to fast-food chains dropped 2% last quarter and 3% the previous quarter compared to the same time last year, according to Lamb Weston.

I don’t frequent fast food chains much. The 5 Guys near me closed down, but I noticed Apache burgers have been downsized when I indulged a few weeks ago.

18 bucks USD for a McD’s meal? That’s insane.

I have spent the better part of 30 years in journalism misattributing to Voltaire the idea that I would defend free speech to the death, even if I disapproved of what was being said (it turns out it was a summary of Voltaire’s views by his biographer, Evelyn Beatrice Hall).

Yet, events since October 7th have revealed that there are, or should be, limits; that people cannot say things that incite real harm to others or society at large.

Hezbollah said it supported efforts to secure a ceasefire with Israel as the IDF continued to target its top leadership and the two armies sharply increased their bombardments.

“After the issue of a ceasefire takes shape, and once diplomacy can achieve it, all of the other details can be discussed and decisions can be taken,” Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem said on Tuesday. “If the enemy [Israel] continues its war, then the battlefield will decide.”

School removes ‘humiliating’ gender-neutral bathroom windows

A school in Pennsylvania has removed windows from gender-neutral bathrooms after being accused of trying to “humiliate” transgender students.

Emory H. Markle Middle School in Hanover, York County, installed windows in two gender-inclusive bathrooms in August in order to prevent vaping.

While the cubicles remained private, people in the hallway were able to see into the rest of the room and therefore spot who had opted to use the inclusive restrooms.

WARMINGTON: Mayor Olivia Chow’s snubbing of Oct. 7 ceremony called ‘outrageous’

Missing the Oct. 7 commemoration is beyond the pale of normal political behaviour or basic human decency and can’t be glossed over. For a mayor to not attend Toronto’s candlelight vigil to remember the 1,200 people slaughtered at the hands of Hamas one year ago on Oct. 7 is the final straw when it comes to Chow’s disrespect for Toronto’s Jewish community.
