The cost to build the navy’s often-delayed, long-anticipated supply ships has shot up once again — this time by almost $1 billion — the federal procurement department announced Friday.
Successive federal governments have tried for almost two decades to deliver joint support ships (JSS) to the navy — vessels used to replenish warships at sea.
After years of delay, the Liberal government awarded Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. a build contract in June 2020 for two ships — HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Preserver — at an anticipated cost of $2.44 billion.
This is how Liberals make money.

Early Friday morning, CNN tried to claim that conservative outrage that Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was allowed to fight in the women’s tournament at the Olympics despite previously failing a gender test was a bunch of fake news stirred up by Vladimir Putin hacks. Later that night, during Laura Coates Live, The Atlantic’s Jemele Hill added another charge: racism, especially racism against black women, despite the fact that Khelif is Arab, not black.

Mounties have seized a number of guns after video surfaced online showing a group of people “dancing with firearms” at a celebration in Surrey.
Surrey RCMP said they became aware of the video circulating on social media Thursday morning.
“It appears from the video that this is some sort of pre-wedding event,” Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha told CTV News in an email on Friday.
In Surrey, BC, a wedding at Harjit Singh Pattar's farmhouse raised concerns after a video showed guests firing guns into the air. Pattar, a Sikhs for Justice supporter, is linked to Hardeep Singh #Nijjar, a known terr0rist with the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF).

An extraordinary saga involving one of France’s most successful brands has just delivered an astonishing new chapter.
Nicolas Puech, 81, the largest individual shareholder in the family-controlled luxury fashion business Hermès International SCA, sparked controversy last year when he announced that he was planning to formally adopt his 51-year-old former gardener and bequeath him half of his €12 billion (£10 billion) fortune.
The rich are different than you and I. Some of them are a lot more dumb.

The Vatican has been rocked by a corruption scandal as the president of its highest court has been placed under investigation for allegedly favouring the mafia when he worked as a prosecutor in Palermo in the early 1990s.
Giuseppe Pignatone, who has worked in Italy and was renowned for taking on the mafia in court, is accused of helping to suppress an investigation into ties between Cosa Nostra — a mafia group from Sicily — and industrial companies from northern Italy.
I guess I’d call Phil “different,” but you know who’s really weird?

An Ontario property owner says he was quoted roughly $400,000 in total costs for a provincially mandated archeological assessment and dig after shards of stone were found in his field that have been identified as Indigenous artifacts.
Bruce Cassel said he was told by the ministry of culture and multiculturalism that he could face steep fines or even jail time under the Ontario Heritage Act for disrupting the artifacts.

Lara Salameh was supposed to be flying out of Beirut Thursday en route to Montreal with her husband and two daughters, but the night before, their flight was cancelled.
She said Air France told her service out of the Lebanese capital was suspended because of the unstable security situation — one that Ottawa has been warning Canadians about as fears of war between Israel and Hezbollah grow.
Salameh is one of the 21,399 Canadians registered as being in Lebanon, a country the Canadian government is urging its citizens to leave. It says they can’t rely on government evacuation flights if war engulfs Lebanon.
