The majority of Canadian retirees are supporting their adult children financially, which they say is having a negative impact on their own finances, a new report has found.
According to Fidelity Investments Canada’s annual retirement report for 2024, 59 per cent of retirees report helping their non-student adult children with both day-to-day expenses and big-ticket items like home purchases, weddings and even education savings for their grandchildren.
This time last year, two little words amid an inventory of campus protesters’ requests might well have gone unremarked upon by most. But when a list of “needs” allegedly drawn up by the Palestinian Solidarity Encampment at UCLA in the US specified “no bagels”, many were quick to see this as a very pointed culinary demand.
A list of desired donations was circulated online by protesters on Thursday, under a heading that read: “Please ensure the donations are BDS [boycott, divestment, sanctions] compliant”. It was said to have been issued by the Students for Justice in Palestine movement manning the barricades at the University of California, Los Angeles, and whoever wrote it was firm: they wanted hot food for lunch (stressing the importance of this in capital letters), and they wanted vegan and gluten-free choices. This being California, they wanted ice. And they did not, on any account, want packaged food, coffee, bananas, nuts – or bagels.

Galen Weston calls Loblaw boycott ‘misguided criticism’, says grocer not responsible for higher prices
Loblaw (L.TO) chairman Galen Weston on Thursday called the boycott of the company “misguided criticism”, saying the company is not responsible for higher food prices and denouncing calls to steal from the grocery chain.
Speaking at the company’s annual meeting of shareholders on Thursday, Weston said that the grocery industry has faced “unprecedented criticism” amid higher food prices, and that “it is natural Loblaw would be singled out as a focal point for media and government and, of course, consumer frustration.” Weston also says that while shareholders “may be troubled by these often-repeated stories,” the grocery retailer “has and will continue to act with integrity.
