CHARLEBOIS: Heard of price fixing? Say hello to discount fixing

With rising food prices, consumers seeking deals can benefit from food rescuing.

According to a recent survey conducted by Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, nearly 20% of consumers now regularly purchase “last day of sale” deals at grocery stores, often referred to more broadly as “enjoy tonight” deals. Some of these discounts can be significant.

Liberal, NDP MPs to travel to West Bank to connect with Palestinians

Fun is forbidden in Chowtown!

‘No fun’: Toronto bans tobogganing at 45 hills across city, says councillor unhappy with move

Toronto has banned tobogganing at 45 hills across the city due to safety concerns and one councillor says he’s not happy with the move because there are more important issues that should be drawing the attention of city staff.

Coun. Brad Bradford, who represents Beaches-East York, said on Friday that residents can manage the physical risk of tobogganing. He said the ban shows that Toronto is becoming a “no fun city” that doesn’t respond to the needs of families.

Micro-tyranny. One more sign it’s time to leave this town.

Davos’s party secrets: Caviar, magic mushrooms, champagne and A-list private concerts

Forget the fondue.

Caviar, magic mushrooms, gold-leaf desserts, A-list selfies, $2,500-per-night hookers and secret dinners are likely to be on the menu as scores of private jets touch down in Switzerland as soon as Sunday to bring the world’s elite to the small Alpine resort town of Davos for what’s officially known as The World Economic Forum 2024.

More than 3000 masters of the universe are expected to show up for the 54th annual event at the Alpine resort nestled in the snowy Landwasser valley. The theme this year is “Rebuilding Trust.”

American citizen Gonzalo Lira dies from neglect in Ukrainian prison

Chilean-American war commentator Gonzalo Lira died shortly before noon on January, 11, 2024 at a hospital in Kharkiv, where he had been imprisoned for eight months since he was accused of justifying Russian war efforts in Ukraine.

Lira came to prominence in 2022 when he emerged as a critical voice in an increasingly dictatorial Ukraine. His arrest in May 2023 on charges of “production and dissemination of materials justifying Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine” helped to galvanize domestic opposition to US funding for the war and led to calls for his release by tech baron Elon Musk and American political commentator Tucker Carlson.

Pedestrian Logic

Why are American pedestrians getting run over so much more often than a decade and a half ago?

You’re not just imagining it: It really has gotten more dangerous to cross the street.

Since 2009, the worst year of the Great Recession, pedestrian death rates per 100,000 people increased 63 percent by 2022, while motorist (driver and passengers) death rates per capita have gone up only 10 percent.

Why is Disney betting on the failed NFT market? Studio is accused of ‘grifting’ as it launches app where fans can collect ‘pointless’ images of Pixar and Star Wars characters

Disney, with depressed stock, a high-profile attack from an activist investor and succession concerns, has embarked on a speculative NFT investment.

Disney Pinnacle, a ‘digital pin and trading experience,’ was launched last month to offer fans the chance to buy and sell Disney, Pixar and Star Wars character NFTs.

These ‘non-fungible tokens’ are digital images which are given unique identification codes using blockchain – the same technology behind cryptocurrency – allowing them to be held as assets and traded online.

This is desperate and or just plain evil. NFT’s were a grift from the get go.
