Torontonians could face a property tax hike as high as 16.5 per cent if the federal government doesn’t come through with the city’s demand for funding to house refugees claimants, budget chief Shelley Carroll warned Wednesday morning at a press conference.
“That is the potential crisis we face…we don’t have the funds,” said Carroll, speaking before the 2024 budget proposed by city staff was presented to council’s budget committee.

Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller says the federal government’s stated 1,000-person limit on temporary resident visas for Palestinians looking to flee Gaza is not a hard cap, despite previous suggestions.
In an interview on CTV News Channel’s Power Play, Miller told host Vassy Kapelos that “no,” the limit as previously stated is not set in stone.

Investigators seeking answers about what caused an Alaska Airlines plane’s near-catastrophic midflight blowout on Jan. 5 are working without a key piece of evidence: audio from the flight’s black box cockpit voice recorder.
National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a press conference the in-flight audio of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, which was carrying 171 passengers, had been lost amid the chaos of making an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon 35 minutes into its journey.
