The strange story behind Joni Mitchell’s ‘outrageous’ blackface experiment

Joni Mitchell will forever be associated with the Laurel Canyon folk music scene of the late Sixties and early Seventies. The scene was a cornerstone of California’s predominantly white, beatnik counterculture; other proponents included The Mamas & the Papas, Carole King, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Quebecers don’t pay the federal carbon tax. That province has its own made-in-Quebec carbon-pricing scheme, so voting to continue imposing the Liberals’ system on the rest of the country had no consequences for Quebecers, and thus few political consequences for the Bloc.
