Troubled US teenagers ‘snatched’ at their parents’ request

Thousands of American teenagers end up in correctional institutions aimed at dealing with behavioural problems and drug abuse

David Patterson was shaken from his sleep one night by two strange men who entered his bedroom and forced the 14-year-old out of bed.

It was shortly after 4am and the two men before him were holding up a pair of handcuffs.

“They said, ‘we could do this the easy way or the hard way’,” he later recalled.

He was soon bungled out of the Patterson family’s California home and into a taxi on the way to the airport. He was being “gooned” – forcibly transported to a place aimed at correcting naughty children’s behaviour.

Mi’kmaw astonomer says we should acknowledge we live under Indigenous skies

As we mark Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we can consider how science as an institution has the same duty to participate in reconciliation as the rest of society does.

For science, reconciliation can mean, among others things, acknowledging the history of racism and exploitation of Indigenous people and their lands that science perpetuated. But another important part is understanding and incorporating Indigenous perspectives in research.

Trans row mother-of-five Caroline Farrow recounts her ordeal at the hands of the Twitter police

Caroline Farrow, a mother of five, despairs of the petty crime and anti-social behaviour afflicting her Surrey village. Youths vandalising the bus stop, shoplifting, taking pot shots at windows with catapults, keying cars.

But try getting the police to act, says Mrs Farrow, a 48-year-old priest’s wife and Catholic commentator, and your entreaty will invariably fall on deaf ears. When teenagers refused to climb down from the roof of a convenience store, police said it was a ‘civil matter’, refusing to get involved.

Still, there was a rare sighting of a patrol car in the village at around 4.45pm last Monday. Blue lights flashing, it sped not towards the latest vandalism scene but the Farrow household. Officers hammered on the door, barged inside and told Mrs Farrow she was under arrest.

Jamie Sarkonak: The Ontario homicide case that has ended racial fairness in court

The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled late September that the criminal records of Indigenous persons can be excluded from their trials to preserve fairness. Trial fairness, to Ontario’s top court, means creating race-based procedural rules to supposedly make up for the effects of systemic racism. In other words, these rules aren’t fair at all.

‘Malicious and targeted’ sabotage halts rail traffic in northern Germany

BERLIN (Reuters) -Cables vital for the rail network were intentionally cut in two places causing a near three-hour halt to all rail traffic in northern Germany on Saturday morning, in what authorities called an act of sabotage without identifying who might be responsible.

The federal police are investigating the incident, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said, adding the motive for it was unclear.

The disruption raised alarm bells after NATO and the European Union last month stressed the need to protect critical infrastructure after what they called acts of sabotage on the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

‘I thought my boyfriend of 10 years was going to propose – then he told me he was trans’

It was 3am and I’d had a lot to drink; two reasons why I was pressing my boyfriend of 10 years on why he hadn’t yet proposed. We were strong and happy, and loved each other madly, so his reticence seemed ludicrous to me when sober, let alone drunk. I suspect it was my ceaseless questioning that ultimately blew a fuse in his brain, because that’s when he told me his secret.

He strung you along for ten years, be grateful it’s done.

Can Russian Hybrid Warfare Win the Day in Ukraine?

In an unpopular response to the retreat of Russian forces in the Ukraine war, President Vladimir Putin ordered the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of reservists. Putin’s order essentially doubled down on a warfighting strategy characterized by high levels of attrition and widespread damage to Ukrainian forces and infrastructure. Russian strikes, actions, and retaliations have caused over $108 billion in damage to Ukrainian infrastructure and left 3.4 million people homeless. Shortly after issuing the mobilization order, Putin signed four treaties to annex Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine following sham referendums orchestrated at gunpoint to join Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that “any attack by Ukraine on the territories incorporated into the Russian Federation would be viewed as an attack on Russia.” In a televised speech, Putin also hinted at his willingness to use nuclear weapons: “We will protect our lands with every means we have at our disposal.” He noted that the United States was the only nation to use nuclear weapons and claimed that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki “set a precedent.”

This seems a tad optimistic, granted never discount an enemy.

Haiti government prepares to ask for ‘specialized armed force’ from abroad

Haiti’s government has authorized the prime minister, Ariel Henry, to ask the international community for a “specialized armed force” to address a crisis caused by a blockade of the country’s main fuel port that has led to crippling shortages, according to a decree circulating on Friday.

Haiti has ground to a halt since a coalition of gangs blocked the Varreux fuel terminal last month. The lack of gas and diesel has crippled transportation and forced businesses and hospitals to halt operations.

It has also led to a shortage of bottled water, just as the country confirmed a new outbreak of cholera, the spread of which is controlled through hygiene and clean water.

WEF’s Digital ID Pilot Project in Travel Has Stalled, Says Transport Canada

The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) initiative to test the use of digital ID in travel with the collaboration of Canada has been delayed due to the pandemic, says Transport Canada.

Details about the WEF’s project called the Known Traveler Digital Identity (KTDI) were revealed through an Inquiry of Ministry filed by Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis in June.

“The gov’t finally admitted that they have a $105.3 million contract with the World Economic Forum for the Known Traveler Digital ID. Take a look at this order paper. It’s no longer a conspiracy theory – it’s a contractual fact!” tweeted Lewis on Oct. 5, providing a link to the Inquiry.
