Ontario taking control of four school boards, including TDSB

Not far off the mark at all.

In an unprecedented crackdown on school boards, the province is swooping in to take control of four — including Toronto public and Catholic — accusing them of financial mismanagement.

And with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic board “at the brink of bankruptcy” and unlikely to make payroll later this summer, Education Minister Paul Calandra said he is sending in a supervisor there, as well as to Ottawa’s public board.

Trump scores major win in birthright citizenship case as Supreme Court curbs nationwide injunctions

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ruled Friday that nationwide injunctions issued by lower court judges “likely exceed” the judicial branch’s constitutional authority — handing the Trump administration a big win in the high court’s most closely-watched case this term.

“[F]ederal courts do not exercise general oversight of the Executive Branch; they resolve cases and controversies consistent with the authority Congress has given them,” conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote for the court’s conservative majority.

Too late … Electric vehicle mandate risks being next carbon tax without ‘adjustments,’ EV industry warns

OTTAWA — The head of a national association representing the electric transportation industry says the federal government, and provinces with a zero-emission vehicle sales mandate, should make “short-term adjustments” to their programs at the risk of the policy going the way of the now-cancelled consumer carbon tax.

Electric Mobility Canada President Daniel Breton’s comments come as auto-makers and others in the industry express a fresh round of concerns about the Liberals’ sales mandate, which has set a target of reaching 100-per-cent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035, beginning with initial targets of hitting 60 per cent by 2030 and at least 20 per cent by 2026.

Beaver activists claim they are ‘doing God’s work’

Under cover of darkness, a nocturnal creature emerges from a crate and takes its first tentative steps into a new life in the wild.

“It is just essentially God’s work. We’re undoing the damage of hundreds of years ago and bringing back these extraordinary animals,” claimed Ben, who spoke to the BBC on the condition of anonymity.

He is part of an underground network where members risk arrest, jail and hefty fines by carrying out covert and unlicensed releases of beavers.

Sabrina Maddeaux: Canada’s immigration absolutists are refusing to correct course, no matter the cost

What’s the difference between an advocacy movement and a radical ideology? The Century Initiative makes an ideal case study. The group bills itself as a “national nonpartisan movement”—and perhaps it once was back in 2011, when its founders first set their minds to tripling Canada’s population to 100 million by 2100. After all, there were once physicians who thought smoking was healthy.

Over 70% of Western Europeans don’t trust US on security … says poll conducted by Carney linked Eurasia Group

Over 70% of Western Europeans think America isn’t a reliable guarantor of European security, according to a new survey. With the Nato summit in the Hague ending today, polling by the Eurasia Group has revealed a crisis of confidence in the Western security apparatus. This comes as Donald Trump has this week cast doubt on his commitment to the alliance’s Article 5 — the commitment to mutual defence when one member is attacked — telling journalists on Air Force One that “it depends on your definition”. Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte has today insisted that Trump is on board with the agreement, something which the US President has himself now affirmed.

The poll was conducted by a branch of the Eurasia Group calling itself the Institute for Global Affairs.

Western European nations as with Canada inspire little confidence as allies. Trump is right to doubt them.

Carney’s ‘nation-building’ projects bill passes Senate — but not without Indigenous pushback

The Senate passed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s landmark ‘nation-building’ projects bill unamended Thursday, giving the federal government extraordinary new powers to fast-track initiatives that have the potential to boost the economy as Canada grapples with the U.S. trade war.

Carney’s cabinet can now streamline the approvals process by allowing some projects to bypass provisions of federal laws like the Impact Assessment Act, which has long been criticized as a hindrance to getting things approved in a timely manner.

Church of England prepares for ‘serious’ war involving UK

The Church of England is readying for a major war by drawing up plans to support the nation during a “serious conflict” involving the UK, and to make it simpler to appoint military chaplains.

The Right Rev Hugh Nelson, the Bishop to the Armed Forces, said on Monday: “I’ve been hearing as I’ve travelled around military establishments and spoken to armed forces personnel over the past two years at least, of rising concern about the threat of a very, very serious conflict, including conflict that involves the UK.”

I think they had better prepare for civil war, perhaps they are.

It strikes me that the real purpose of DEI and the emasculation of the armed forces is not just to discourage recruitment from their traditional talent pool of young white males but to cultivate a force with as little connection or loyalty to Canada as possible. One much more easily persuaded to shoot citizens as the need arises.

Support for Western Separatism Nearing Levels of 1980s Quebec: New Study

The Western separatist movement is reaching levels of support seen during the initial surge of Quebec’s independence movement in the 1980s, says a new study from the Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy.

The report, released on June 26, noted that while support for Western separatism is still not as high as Quebec at the peak of its sovereignty movement, support for western provinces leaving Canada continues to grow.

When You Vote “Wrong”: EU Allies Push To Overturn Polish Election

Poland’s recent presidential election is now at risk of being overturned after the conservative candidate, Karol Nawrocki, won a surprise victory against the liberal favorite. Backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, Nawrocki defeated the liberal Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, a close ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Brussels-aligned coalition.

But instead of acceptance, Nawrocki’s win has triggered a wave of resistance. Unlike in other EU countries—where electoral irregularities are tolerated if the “correct” candidates win—Poland now faces the prospect of having the vote annulled altogether. The Supreme Court has announced that it will issue a verdict on the election’s validity on July 1 after receiving more than 50,000 complaints.
