Fighting violent online network preying on kids requires all of us

The RCMP announced on Thursday the terrorism-related arrest of a 15-year old Alberta boy. He is being charged under Section 810.011 of the Criminal Code — Fear of terrorism offence.

This section of the Criminal Code states that “A person who fears on reasonable grounds that another person may commit a terrorism offence may, with the attorney general’s consent, lay an information before a provincial court judge.” This suggests that the RCMP had reason to believe the boy might carry out an act of terrorism.

Iran Duping Trump with IAEA Inspections. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Death To Israel Missile Iran

Once again, the United States has sat down with Iran for yet another round of nuclear negotiations — this time the fifth. And once again, we are told that there will be another round in the “near future.” Sound familiar? It should. Iran’s cat-and-mouse diplomatic theater is not a breakthrough; it is a rerun. Just as the past rounds, this latest episode concluded without any meaningful agreement, while Iran continues to advance in its nuclear program, intercontinental ballistic missiles — not needed to attack Israel — and rebuild its air defense.

Lorne Gunter: PM Carney set to worsen Trudeau’s fiscal failures

Ever wonder how glamorous the life of a daily newspaper columnist is?

Well, here’s how I spent my Friday morning. First, I did a deep dive into government workforce statistics from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (via the Canadian Taxpayers Federation). Then I swam around in the luxurious pools of the federal government’s Main Spending Estimates. And finally, I bathed in an RBC Economics analysis of first-quarter GDP numbers.

Chinese Communist-approved cardinal took part in papal election. Why is no one talking about this?

The conclave that elected the first American pope had another first that few have heard about: a voting cardinal named Stephen Chow who was approved for his current position by the Chinese Communist Party, pursuant to a 2018 pact between the Party and the Vatican. He is, by Chinese law, obliged to “support the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party” as part of the CCP’s United Front Work Department. That’s its entity charged with conducting global propaganda and influence operations.

Hamas accepts US ceasefire but adds demands Israel will refuse

The militant group responded to Steve Witkoff’s proposal with conditions including a permanent truce and the IDF’s withdrawal from Gaza

Hamas has said it is willing to agree to a US-led ceasefire proposal but has also offered a new timeline and demanded a permanent end to hostilities.

The militant group’s response — the most promising sign of progress towards a peace deal since March — accepted some of the terms of the original proposal drawn up by Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Middle East envoy. Those included the handover of ten live hostages and the bodies of 18 dead hostages.

Bombshell: Secret Service Whistleblower Revealed Troubling Account Of Biden In The White House

A Secret Service whistleblower has come forward with a shocking allegation: former President Joe Biden was so mentally impaired during his time in the White House that he would “get lost in his closet,” according to Sen. Josh Hawley. On Friday, Hawley revealed the disturbing claim as part of a broader accusation that Democrats engaged in a deliberate cover-up of Biden’s cognitive decline—what he now calls one of the most egregious political scandals in modern presidential history.

No Kill I AI!

No Kill I AI!

The face isn’t real, but her story is: Why W5 used AI on an interview with a rape survivor

In the opening minutes of our documentary, Sleeping With the Enemy, viewers meet “Melanie,” a Canadian woman whose life was shattered by a Facebook message on the weekend of her bridal shower.

I get the rationale behind W5’s decision to use an AI generated construction in this instance but it does highlight the possibilities that await for less scrupulous use of AI.

What Happens When AI Replaces Workers?

On Wednesday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei declared AI could eliminate half of all entry level white collar jobs within five years. Last week, a senior LinkedIn executive reported that AI is already starting to take jobs from new grads. In April, Fiverr’s CEO made it clear: “AI is coming for your job. Heck, it’s coming for my job too.” Even the new Pope is warning about AI’s dramatic potential to reshape our economy.

Why do they think this?

Is An Energy Corridor the New National Dream or an Ottawa Mirage?

“Nationalism was a strange new word. Patriotism was derivative, racial cleavage was deep, culture was regional, provincial animosities savage, and the idea of unity ephemeral”. The writer goes on to say, “There are few Canadians yet who care deeply about it; most provincial politicians indeed, are ‘either indifferent or hostile’” to the project.

The gloves are off between Zelensky and mayor Klitschko

In one corner is Vitali Klitschko, the towering mayor of Kyiv who, when he was a world champion heavyweight boxer, was renowned for his knockout power. In the other is President Zelensky, the diminutive president who has demonstrated remarkable staying power during three years of war with President Putin.

The two men are perhaps Ukraine’s most internationally recognised politicians. But they are now effectively at war after a simmering grudge between them became public. Zelensky has forced Klitschko, who is said to harbour presidential ambitions despite an aborted run in 2014, into a political clinch from which his escape looks improbable. The president has used martial law to appoint a rival military administration in the capital to mirror the mayor’s responsibilities.

Toronto Catholic District School Board warns of ’dangerous’ social media trends

The Toronto Catholic District School Board is warning parents about “dangerous” social media challenges that are trending among students in Ontario schools.

The board says the challenges are recorded on video and shared online to encourage others to participate, but they can pose serious risks to students and the entire school community.

Hegseth warns China poses ‘imminent’ threat to Taiwan and urges Asia to boost defence

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has warned of China posing an “imminent” threat to Taiwan, while urging Asian countries to boost defence spending and work with the US to deter war.

While the US does not “seek to dominate or strangle China”, it would not be pushed out of Asia nor allow its allies to be intimidated, Hegseth said while addressing a high-level Asian defence summit.

In response, China has accused the US of being the “biggest troublemaker” for regional peace.
