Will Canadian PM Carney Maintain His Anti-Trump Messaging Post-Election?

Prime Minister Mark Carney was elected after running a campaign heavily focused on saying U.S. President Donald Trump poses an existential threat to Canada, but it remains to be seen whether this messaging will continue now that the election has passed.

The Liberals tapped heavily into rising nationalist sentiment in Canada, caused by Trump’s talk of making the country the 51st U.S. state and by the imposition of three different sets of tariffs on its largest trading partner.

Trump disliked Trudeau – why Carney may fare better

The victory-party din for Mark Carney and his Liberal Party had only just faded when Donald Trump chimed in with a less than ringing endorsement of the winners.

“It was the one that hated Trump, I think, the least that won,” the US president said on Wednesday of Carney, whose party had just retained power by winning a near outright majority of the seats in Canada’s general election.

The Canadian prime minister may accept being the lesser of two evils in Trump’s mind, however. The US president also said that he thinks the former Bank of England governor “couldn’t have been nicer” in the first post-election phone conversation.

Hoary Old Commie slams New Democrat party for ‘absolutely disastrous campaign’

OTTAWA—Former NDP MP Charlie Angus says the party ran an “absolutely disastrous campaign” that “missed the moment” and focused too much on leader Jagmeet Singh, as more New Democrats leave the door open to leadership bids.

The scathing assessment — from a prominent New Democrat who placed second in the 2017 leadership race that catapulted Singh to the party’s top job — came as the NDP caucus was set to meet Thursday to discuss its next steps following the party’s worst-ever election result.

On her Twitter account @chckpea, Preston shared a picture of herself in a Make America Great Again bucket hat and declared she would hide her views no longer.

Prince Harry loses security appeal

The Duke of Sussex has lost his appeal against the Government over his security.

Prince Harry argued that he was singled out for “unjustified and inferior treatment” when he was denied the right to automatic police protection in the UK.

He flew to London last month to attend a two-day hearing at the Court of Appeal, during which his barrister argued that the Home Office committee responsible for VIP security arrangements had failed to adhere to its own policies.

OTTAWA — Devastated and concerned.

AfD classified as extreme-right by German intelligence

Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has been designated as right-wing extremist by the country’s federal office for the protection of the constitution.

“The ethnicity- and ancestry-based understanding of the people prevailing within the party is incompatible with the free democratic order,” the domestic intelligence agency said in a statement.

The AfD came second in federal elections in February, winning a record 152 seats in the 630-seat parliament with 20.8% of the vote.

Carney to visit Trump at White House next week

He confirmed he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.

Carney won Canada. Saving the country from Trump won’t be so easy

Mark Carney has engineered one of the most unlikely victories in political history, saving Canada’s Liberal Party from near oblivion and going from the outskirts of politics to prime minister in a matter of months.

But the former Bank of England governor’s biggest challenge still lies ahead: protecting Canada’s economy from Donald Trump.

Mr Trump has repeatedly claimed Canada will become the “cherished 51st state” and levied heavy tariffs on the US’s northern neighbour. In his victory speech Carney said Trump “is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never happen.”

Union says GM plans to cut shifts at Oshawa, Ont. plant

The union representing auto workers at the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ont. says the company is planning to reduce shifts, citing U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Unifor, which represents about 3,000 employees at the Oshawa facility, said the shift reduction is “reckless” and that the move will “ripple through” the auto parts supplier network. It is not immediately clear how many jobs will be impacted.

GM said it will return to a two-shift operation “in light of forecast demand and the evolving trade environment.”
