How Aldrich Ames became the US’s most damaging double agent

Aldrich Ames spent nearly a decade selling secret information to the Soviet Union, compromising more than 100 clandestine operations, and leading to the deaths of at least 10 Western intelligence assets. On 28 April 1994, the double agent was jailed for life. In February of that year, the BBC spoke to one of the spies who was betrayed by Ames, but who lived to tell the tale.

In 1985, Soviet agents working for the CIA suddenly began to disappear. One by one, these Western intelligence sources were picked up by the Soviet intelligence service, the KGB, interrogated and, very often, executed.

See illegal migrant blowing Ice Barbie’s thousands on debauched bender before his shocking confession

The illegal immigrant charged with robbing DHS Secretary Kristi Noem immediately used her credit cards for a boozy night in DC, police say.

Mario Bustamante-Leiva, 49, was arrested this week after allegedly robbing Noem at The Capital Burger restaurant in downtown DC, taking off with over $3,000 in cash in her Gucci handbag.

Noem said the thief also took off with makeup bag, driver’s license, passport, medication, apartment keys, DHS access badge and some blank checks.

It’s the ‘most important election of our lifetime.’ Just like all these other ones

OTTAWA — In late March, Liberal Leader Mark Carney set foot for the first time in his Ottawa-area riding’s campaign office and began his speech to volunteers with a stark declaration: “This election is the most important election of our lifetime”.

Only time will tell if Carney and the many others — including Conservatives, pollsters, unions and even former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien — who argue that the ongoing federal election is the most important or consequential one in 81.6 years (the average life expectancy in Canada) are correct.

Adam Zivo: Vancouver car ramming suspect should have never been free in the first place

A joyful Filipino street festival ended in carnage Saturday night after a man driving an SUV rammed into a crowd, killing 11 people and injuring at least 20 more. The man arrested and charged with eight counts of murder has a history of mental illness. While many factors contributed to this avoidable tragedy, perhaps the greatest of them was Canada’s failure to embrace involuntary treatment and institutionalization.

Élie Cantin-Nantel: The polls vs. the people: Notes on a bipolar Conservative campaign

The 2025 Conservative campaign was one that featured multiple realities.

In legacy media TV studios and editorial pages, you have a punditry class convinced Pierre Poilievre is about to lose, amidst piles of polls showing Mark Carney’s Liberals ahead.

But in farmers’ fields, warehouses, and factories across the country, Poilievre held historic rallies in the thousands, with attendees convinced something big is about to happen.

Macron has let an epidemic of violence grip France

These have been terrible days in France. On Thursday, a 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death and several of her classmates wounded at a private school in Nantes. It was an attack of singular ferocity. The victim, who was stabbed 57 times, was killed by a fellow pupil, a boy her own age. According to police, he had no ‘clear motive’ for his crime.

On Friday a 20-year-old, named by police as Olivier H, walked into a mosque in southern France and told Aboubakar, a 24-year-old of Malian origin, that he would like to pray. Aboubakar, who performed odd jobs in the mosque, led Olivier into the prayer room and together they knelt. Olivier then produced a knife and stabbed Aboubakar to death. As he filmed the death throes of his victim, the killer insulted Allah and stated his intention to kill again. A huge manhunt was launched, but late on Sunday night Olivier handed himself in to police in Florence, Italy.

Trump’s Electric Vehicle Rollback Helps Consumers, Won’t Hurt Climate

Before we let Democratic legislators get on their high horses about the Trump administration’s obliteration of California’s climate goals via its elimination of the federal electric vehicle mandate, let’s look at one statistic that should put matters in perspective.

Between 2003 and 2019, California reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 13 percent thanks to billions of dollars in spending and myriad mandates designed to shift energy use to electric generation. Yet 2020’s wildfires “caused twice the amount of greenhouse gas emissions” that were saved over those sixteen years, according to a University of Chicago report. Fires are obliterating any savings from our state’s high-profile move away from fossil fuels.

GUNTER: After 10 years of Liberal failure, it’s time for a Conservative approach

You should have heard a loud ‘pop’ on Thursday — the sound of Liberal Mark Carney’s I’m-the-best-leader-to-deal-with-Trump bubble bursting.

On March 28, Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump held what Carney and his aides called a “positive” phone call. Afterwards, Carney insisted “the president respected Canada’s sovereignty … both in his private and public comments.”

Palestinian Leaders Play Musical Chairs To Dupe Western Donors

On April 26, a group of unelected Palestinian Authority (PA) officials approved the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as “Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Vice President of the [non-existent] State of Palestine.”

PA President Mahmoud Abbas, who also serves as chairman of the PLO Executive Committee, had nominated the 64-year-old al-Sheikh for this position in accordance with a decision by the Palestinian Central Council, a body dominated by Abbas loyalists, to create the position of “Deputy Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and Vice President of the State of Palestine.”

Why the U.S. Shouldn’t Copy Canada’s Experiment with Free Drugs

Canada, where I call home, is the only jurisdiction in the world that hands out free addictive drugs to addicts. Under the “safer-supply” policy, Canadian health authorities distribute hydromorphone—an opioid as potent as heroin—as well as, to a lesser degree, oxycodone, pharmaceutical fentanyl, and mild stimulants. These drugs are provided at no cost and, until recently, rarely had to be consumed under medical supervision.

How the fun police came for your holiday

Oppressive rules are being imposed in some of the world’s biggest tourism spots. Whatever happened to letting your hair down?

Aren’t holidays supposed to be about having fun? If that question seems too obvious for a serious travel article, you’ve clearly missed the barrage of spirit-crushing rules emanating from some of the world’s most successful tourism spots in recent years, as destinations across the world turn their backs on the good-time crowd.

Just look at the Balearic Islands, which have spent much of the past few years looking for inventive ways to clamp down on boozy travellers, including restricting so-called party boats and banning alcohol sales between certain hours. Last year the Spanish government even began a new initiative to gather data on the worst nationalities for drunkenness and send school-report style missives to their respective embassies.
