Zelensky and Trump hold ‘potentially historic’ meeting in St Peter’s Basilica

Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Donald Trump for a “potentially historic” one-on-one meeting in St Peter’s Basilica on the sidelines of Pope Francis’s funeral.

The two leaders met for private talks amid speculation “funeral diplomacy” could bring a breakthrough on their differences over ending the war in Ukraine.

They were pictured hunched over and facing each other on two simple red chairs inside the Italian high renaissance church, moments before the ceremony began.

These are the top 10 ridings to watch in Toronto and the GTA

If Mark Carney is to lead his Liberal Party to its fourth straight term in government, seats in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area will form the backbone of his win.

There are 55 ridings up for grabs between the 416 and 905, home to an estimated 4.5 million eligible voters.

Toronto and the GTA have been dominated by the Liberals in every election since 2015. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party will need to chip away at that dominance to have any hope of winning enough seats nationwide to form government.

Gypsy Queen is Happy

Toronto police say they are searching for three female suspects accused of sexually assaulting victims at businesses in Scarborough in an attempt to distract them and steal their cash.

In a news release issued Friday, police say the same three suspects are believed to be responsible for at least five incidents that occurred at commercial businesses in Scarborough over a period of 10 months.

All of the suspects were described by police as having “olive skin” and “long black hair.” Police said two of the women had a “medium build” and the third had a “thin build.”

Trump is winning the global energy game

The Trump administration is full of contradictions. Last Tuesday, the US President said that while some movement might be possible, high tariffs will remain on most Chinese goods. On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that US tariffs on China are unsustainable.

GUNTER: Carney’s borrowing plans would sink affordability for Canadians

Taxpayers can’t hope that any of the major parties in Monday’s election will balance the budget soon, not even the Conservatives.

Indeed, in most Western democracies politicians of all stripes have given up on the idea of making expenditures equal revenues. The best that can be hoped for is reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio.

Conclave explained: What happens next after the Pope’s funeral?

The days between the death of a Pope and the election of his successor are packed with centuries-old ceremonies and rituals, following a timetable intended to find a new pontiff within three weeks.

Tradition begins at the moment of the Pope’s death, as an official given the title camerlengo, or chamberlain, calls out the Pope’s name three times at his bedside to ensure he has died.

His next task is to deface and smash the pescatorio, or “ring of the fisherman”, which symbolises papal authority and was once used as a seal on official documents.

MANDEL: Ontario must cover U.S. surgery for trans patient who wants a vagina — and to keep her penis

Behold your tax dollars at work. OHIP has been ordered, for the third time, to pay for an out-of-country surgery for an Ontario trans, nonbinary patient who wants to keep the P while she gets the V.

The provincial insurer argued that vaginoplasty is a listed, insured gender-affirming service — but only if it came along with the usual removal of the person’s existing penis. But K.S., who doesn’t identify as exclusively male or female, wanted to have both.

Join the CAF for an action packed career in the Male Tampon Supply Brigade

Canada’s military recruiters have their work cut out for them.

A survey of more than 24,000 post-secondary students from across the country shows less than one per cent of them (188) ranked the Canadian Forces as their No. 1 preferred employer after graduation, and just over three per cent (829) identified the organization as among their top three to five choices.

Harvard Is an Islamist Outpost

For decades it nurtured resentful leftists, and antisemitism united them in a common cause.

I taught at Harvard from 1993 through 2014, and I don’t think the federal government’s threats will be effective at changing the university’s culture. Harvard’s leaders don’t yet understand the danger that culture poses to the country or why it required intervention.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the Islamists of al Qaeda attacked the U.S. in a suicide mission that used American planes as their instruments of destruction. On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas Islamists exploited Israel’s openness by invading the country, massacring civilians and kidnapping others. Jihadists use these new forms of warfare against those they can’t conquer by force. What concerns us here is their capture of elite American schools as outposts.

They Stole a Quarter-Billion in Crypto and Got Caught Within a Month

In the balmy late afternoon of Aug. 25, 2024, Sushil and Radhika Chetal were house-hunting in Danbury, Conn., in an upscale neighborhood of manicured yards and heated pools. Sushil, a vice president at Morgan Stanley in New York, was in the driver’s seat of a new matte gray Lamborghini Urus, an S.U.V. with a price tag starting around $240,000. As they turned a corner, the Lamborghini was suddenly rammed from behind by a white Honda Civic. At the same time, a white Ram ProMaster work van cut in front, trapping the Chetals. According to a criminal complaint filed after the incident, a group of six men dressed in black and wearing masks emerged from their vehicles and forced the Chetals from their car, dragging them toward the van’s open side door.

Nadav Steinman: For Jewish Canadians, this election presents a stark choice

As Canada prepares for a pivotal federal election on Monday, the stakes for the Jewish community — and for the future of Canada-Israel relations — have never been higher. This is not just another ballot. It is a litmus test for the country’s moral compass, a reckoning with the rising tide of antisemitism, and a defining moment for Canada’s role in supporting its democratic allies in the world, Israel among them.

Stark? Obvious is more to the point.

Why Hollywood could be the new Detroit

It’s a town built on one industry. So what happens when everyone realises it’s cheaper and easier to film in Hertfordshire?

Fans taking the popular studio tours in Los Angeles are given a behind-the-scenes look at where movie magic from a previous age was filmed. Universal has sets from Back to the Future, while Warner Bros boasts everything from Friends to Blade Runner.

These days, however, scenes are more likely to be filmed in Hertfordshire or Hungary than Hollywood.

Los Angeles has suffered a catastrophic collapse in film and television production, as the industry synonymous with the city shifts elsewhere to cheaper rivals able to entice producers with lucrative incentives.
