Colby Cosh: Mark Carney and the next lost decade

What do you suppose it is like to be Michael Ignatieff right now? Gosh, he must really think the good Lord has it out for him. In 2006, as a stylish liberal intellectual with a star reputation in Europe, he rolled up his sleeves and ran for the Commons seat in Etobicoke — Lakeshore. His ultimate ambitions were no secret, but he thought he had better learn the ropes first, get yelled at on a few doorsteps and absorb the sights and scents of an actual Canadian neighbourhood. In 2009, the suffering Liberals turned to him as a new leader and anointed saviour, with other dignitaries flinging themselves out of his path to make way.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s most prominent abuse survivors, dies by suicide

Virginia Giuffre, one of the most prominent survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse, has died by suicide, her family said Friday.

Giuffre, 41, died in Neergabby, Australia, where she had been living for several years.

Giuffre was one of the earliest and loudest voices calling for criminal charges against Epstein and his enablers. Other Epstein abuse survivors later credited her with giving them the courage to speak out.

Why Smart Canadians Are Fleeing for the U.S.

It started with Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre, who destroyed accountability in Ottawa.

Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to President Trump’s suggestion that the threat of tariffs might prompt Canada to spend more on defense and border protection with a dire prediction: “Canada cannot then survive as a nation state.” Mr. Trump then quipped that Canada might be better off as the 51st state. It was Mr. Trudeau’s flippant, pathetic comment that made a mockery out of Canada, not Mr. Trump’s response to it.

Canada is the second-largest country in the world by land mass, endowed with vast natural wealth. With a smaller population of 40 million compared with its southern neighbor’s roughly 340 million people, Canada contributed handily to the Allies’ victory in World War II. And Mr. Trudeau thought a tariff renegotiation could be the end of his country?

America’s electric car crash is over. Europe has finally noticed

American electric vehicle sales have continued to inch up, from 7 per cent of new cars sold last year to 7.5 per cent this year. But no one now expects that they will reach the more than 50 per cent mandated by the Biden administration by 2032. President Donald Trump has upended the EV landscape – sending shockwaves through the industry that are reverberating not just in the United States, but globally.

Canada remains on a collision course with reality however.

Why Canada’s youth won’t vote for Mark Carney

When Stephen Matthews votes in Canada’s election on Monday, the country’s cost of living will be at the forefront of his mind.

“I’m a lifelong Liberal but I’m definitely leaning Conservative,” he said as he picked up his iced coffee order at a Starbucks in the bellwether constituency of Peterborough about an hour’s drive from Toronto.

The country’s topsy turvy election has shifted one way and then another.

JAY GOLDBERG: Carney’s voodoo budgeting puts taxpayers last

Deficits, deficits and more deficits.

That’s Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s plan when it comes to budgeting, as he hopes to lead the nation for the next four years.

Many Canadians are alarmed at the sheer scale at which the Liberals have piled up debt over the past decade. Since the Trudeau Liberals came to power in 2015, the federal debt has more than doubled.

Why won’t Hitler conspiracies die?

Eighty years ago, as Red Army shells rained down over Adolf Hitler’s Reich Chancellery garden, a group of his remaining friends and colleagues huddled under the block-shaped exit of his last grim command centre, the Führerbunker. Flames engulfed the bodies of the newlywed Mr and Mrs Hitler, casting a flickering light over the onlookers, who raised their arms in a final straight-armed salute.

The enduring cultural and political relevance of Hitler’s death hardly needs restating. It gave us online parodies of the rant scene in the film Downfall and, of course, a wild range of conspiracy theories.

The Pope who did not love the West (or the Jews)

The left loved Pope Francis when he denigrated capitalism, globalization, inequalities between rich and poor as well as Muslim migrants, and when he put theoretical Catholic violence and very real Islamic violence on the same level. The left loved the Pope when Francis willingly submitted to the dictates of political correctness and seemed to have adopted Chesterton’s famous “crazy Christian virtues”.

To stop Pierre Poilievre, I put Canada before the NDP, Jagmeet Singh tells the Star

Facing a possible collapse of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh insists he has no regrets.

The NDP leader stood by his decision not to plunge the country into an early election last fall while support for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals plummeted, telling the Star’s editorial board he “couldn’t stomach” the idea of causing Pierre Poilievre’s seizure of power, and that he made the choice to put Canada’s interests ahead of those of the New Democratic Party.

I hope he loses his seat.

China Helping the Houthis Attack U.S. Navy Vessels

“We can confirm the reporting that Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. (CGSTL) is directly supporting Iran-backed Houthi terrorist attacks on U.S. interests,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on April 17th at her regular press briefing

Specifically, CGSTL has been providing targeting data and probably raw satellite imagery to the Houthis for their attacks on U.S. Navy vessels in the Red Sea.

China did not issue a clear official denial of the State Department charge.

Blackboard Jungle 2025: What’s Driving the Epidemic of School Violence in Canada?

Things have changed at schools I guess. Looks like they’re passing a shiv.

“No place for a reasoned discussion: When newly-minted high school teacher “Cassie” tried to lead her English and Art class in a discussion about race and oppression, a black student in her classroom called her a “gook” and then attacked her with a large pair of art scissors, leaving her with several “big, dark” bruises and a severe case of PTSD.”

It’s a mystery to me.

Liberals Loathe Arrival of ‘MAGA Media’ Inside the White House

The New York Times recently published a hissy fit about the White House allowing reporters into the Briefing Room who didn’t vote for Kamala Harris. Here was the amazing protest sentence: “Longtime White House reporters say the result has been an erosion of their independence.”

The presence of a reporter who didn’t vote Democrat doesn’t “erode” the anti-Trump animus (“independence”) of liberal activist journalists. It might balance it, suggesting journalism and liberalism are not exactly the same thing.
