KLEIN: Liberals eye home equity tax while Canadians shout ‘fake news’ and hurl emojis

The response to my recent column on the Liberal government’s quiet interest in taxing your home equity was predictable — but revealing.

Instead of engaging with the facts, many online commentators resorted to the usual routine: Hashtags, name-calling, shouting “fake news” into the void, and hurling emojis like they’re making a serious argument.

Let that sink in.

Mexico’s Sending More Sewage Across the Border, and It’s Becoming a Big U.S. National Security Issue

As I write nearby, the decades-long problem of Mexico sending its raw sewage gushing into the Tijuana River and polluting the beaches of the U.S. has grown worse in the past few years with the huge population growth in Tijuana, Mexico. But now it’s affecting America’s national security interests, and s*** just got real.

‘Missed penis’ on Bayeux Tapestry raises questions between scholars

A row has broken out between scholars after an expert claimed to have discovered an extra penis on the Bayeux Tapestry.

Seven years ago, Prof George Garnett, an Oxford academic, claimed to have identified 93 depictions of male genitalia in the tapestry; five were on men, while 88 belonged to horses.

However, Dr Christopher Monk, a mediaeval scholar and expert on Anglo-Saxon nudity, has now claimed that he has found a another penis, pushing the figure up to 94.

In his closing pitch, Poilievre paints a dark picture of Canada if Liberals are re-elected

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre painted a gloomy picture of Canada in his closing pitch to voters on Thursday, saying life will get worse if they return a Liberal government in this election.

After sounding a more optimistic and hopeful tone earlier this week around the release of his party’s platform, Poilievre reverted to form at a news conference in Halifax. He said the country will face nothing but “despair” if Liberal Leader Mark Carney is the next prime minister — signalling he will go negative with his messaging in the final days to try and keep his opponent out of power.

Will Elon Musk really leave Doge and what happens when he does?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said he will step back from his role with the Trump administration’s cost-cutting team known as Doge.

Those at the White House, including the president, have said it has long been the plan that Musk would soon step away, but the news came as the billionaire’s car business saw earnings plunge.

Musk’s announcement left many unanswered questions, including when he will actually leave the administration and what will happen to Doge, which stands for Department of Government Efficiency.

Carson Jerema: Poilievre could only ever satisfy the media by becoming a Liberal … like Doug Ford

The biggest, though by no means the smartest or the most coherent, complaint against Conservatives is that they aren’t Liberals. This complaint comes, bizarrely, as often from other conservatives, as it does from the left. Or perhaps it isn’t so bizarre, as Conservatives who want their side to become more like the other side will always be given time by Canada’s monochromatic media, which seems to agree that the only good Conservative is a Liberal.

‘Staggering growth’ makes Toronto the fastest-growing metro area in Canada and the U.S. for second straight year

In New York, Frank Sinatra says, they want to be a part of it. Chicago, he claims, has all that jazz. But it turns out Toronto is where people are going.

Toronto was the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Canada and the U.S. for the second consecutive year and saw an estimated population increase of nearly 269,000 people from July 2023 to July 2024, according to data from Statistics Canada and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Prosecutors to seek death penalty for Mangione as he heads to court

US federal prosecutors have filed a formal notice seeking the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting dead a healthcare boss in New York.

Prosecutors argue in the filing that the 26-year-old killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson “to amplify an ideological message” and spark resistance to the health insurance industry.

The move was made just hours ahead of his plea hearing on four federal charges later on Friday.

Jamie Sarkonak: Just like Trudeau, Carney is planning to go full steam ahead on DEI

Long before he entered politics, Mark Carney was a full-throated supporter of social engineering via progressive policy. His platform, released Monday, has confirmed that his government will be no different in that regard than that of Justin Trudeau.

Carney’s plan shallowly pushes diversity both in form and in substance. Form-wise, his platform alleges itself to have been “reviewed through an equity lens using a GBA+ analysis,” meaning that for each commitment has been mulled over extensively by the privilege police.
