Geoff Russ: Carney already eroding Canadians’ trust in government

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s willingness to shield an MP who openly mused about targeting political rivals is more than a scandal. It erodes Canadians’ trust.

When a government leader tolerates this sort of behaviour it sends a message that accountability and safety are negotiable. It will certainly harden the opinions of rightfully cynical Canadians, just 28 per cent of which have confidence in the federal parliament.

Couple who ran Swedish eco-retreat fled leaving behind barrels of human waste

A Danish chef couple who attracted international acclaim with a “forest resort” in Sweden have been tracked down to Guatemala after apparently going on the run from tax authorities, leaving behind 158 barrels of human waste.

Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbæk founded their purportedly eco-friendly retreat, Stedsans, in Halland, southern Sweden, after claiming to have “felt the call of the wild” in Copenhagen, where they ran a popular rooftop restaurant.

Stedsans, formed of 16 wooden cottages looking out on to nature, attracted praise from influencers and reviewers, who described it as “magical” and “enchanting luxury”.

Chinese Interference in Our Democracy Needs Far More Attention Than It’s Getting

It is sometimes hard to figure out just what it takes for people to realize a crisis is growing in strength. Like the frog who sits in the pot while the water slowly rises in temperature only to take note after it is too late, we appear to be sleepwalking into a major undermining of our democracy.

I refer, of course, to the problem of interference in our electoral process. Despite decades of intelligence by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), at least one report (by former Gov. Gen. David Johnston) and a lengthy inquiry (the Hogue commission), this is generating next to no attention in the current race to determine who will form the next Canadian government.

Carney crawls to Trump

Canadian PM quickly pledges to negotiate ‘new economic and security relationship’ with US after Trump pauses tariffs on other nations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged Wednesday to negotiate a “new economic and security relationship” with the US – an announcement that comes on the same day President Trump paused tariffs for dozens of nations, but not Canada.

“The pause on reciprocal tariffs announced by President Trump is a welcome reprieve for the global economy,” Carney wrote on X, referring to the commander in chief’s 90-day pause on sweeping trade fees.

GUNTER: Carney Libs could never deliver on policies stolen from Conservatives

Mark Carney is stealing Conservative campaign promises, which isn’t by itself a bad thing because theirs are better than his.

Lower taxes, less government spending and fewer bureaucrats, more affordable housing, quicker approval of major projects, better national defence, pipelines east and west; all of those are commendable. (The only Conservative policy missing is lower crime and tougher bail.)

BARBER: Canada leading in what, exactly?

Let’s face it, Canada’s not going to win a trade war with the US. Time to make a deal with Trump.’

Various news outlets have reported that Prime Minister Carney was thumping his chest, claiming that Canada is willing to lead if the US is not. This raises two questions.

First, lead based on what?

Second, lead in what?

Of the G7, Canada is ranked dead last in economic standing ― a ranking it has long held.

Putin sets sights on a new ‘western enemy’ — the devil

Not content with outlawing the fictitious “international LGBT social movement” and clamping down on teenagers who like to dress up as furry animals, Russian MPs have now set their sights on another formidable foe — Satan himself.

“Satanism and everything connected with it must be considered as a direct threat to Russian statehood!” Andrei Kartapolov, a senior MP who heads the Russian parliament’s defence committee, said at a meeting in Moscow. He also alleged that satanists in Russia were funded by the West.

“We need to look at what money and what means these satanists live on. Where are their books and posters printed, who pays for their concerts, shows, performances, the renting of halls, bars, and clubs?” Kartapolov said. “This is nothing more than a form of warfare waged by the united West against our country.”

LILLEY: When it comes to difficult questioning, Carney crumbles under pressure

Mark Carney was asked some tough questions on Tuesday and he had no good answers for any of them. That goes against his sales pitch to voters that he’s the guy you need in a crisis, in a pinch.

The thing is the crisis can change and it often does with governments.

While governments come to power with big plans, they often end up lurching from crisis to crisis, not of their own making. They need to be nimble, they need to be able to respond to changing circumstances quickly and Carney doesn’t appear to be able to do that.

The Birmingham bin strike is a symptom of British decline

For nearly five weeks, piles of rubbish taller than most people have lined the streets of Birmingham – what is supposed to be the UK’s second city. Rats, some reportedly the size of kittens, have begun to roam the streets like they own the joint. Last week, locals became so desperate that they mobbed a bin lorry, hurling uncollected rubbish at it out of frustration. The city is, nearly by definition, a dump – much to the chagrin of proud Brummies who have always, quite rightly, rejected that tag.

Toronto is overrun with rats and we didn’t need no strike!

Canadians weigh in on issues influencing their election day decision in a new poll

A new poll from Abacus Data found that there appears to be a stark difference in the “emotional drivers” influencing Canadians’ voting intention in the upcoming federal election. The firm also said those factors are spilling over into who voters see as best suited to become the next prime minister.

“The Conservatives resonate with those in a scarcity mindset — voters seeking immediate relief and system disruption — while the Liberals connect with those in a precarity mindset, who are more focused on navigating uncertainty and restoring long-term stability,” Abacus’s Eddie Sheppard and CEO David Coletto wrote.

In a national survey of 2,000 adults between March 20 and 25, respondents were asked about the issue weighing heaviest on their April 28 election day decision.

Labour drops plans for Muslim rape gang inquiries

Labour has dropped its plans for five local grooming gang inquiries.

In January, Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, told MPs that the Government would provide £5 million to support up to five initial local inquiries modelled on the judge-led one into grooming gangs in Telford.

However, on Tuesday Jess Phillips, a Home Office minister, announced that “following feedback” the Government would adopt a “flexible approach” where the money would be available for local councils to use as they wished to support grooming gang work.

This is evil.

Antifa ‘Hammer Girl’ and Her Accomplice Escape Justice Once Again

The European Parliament is quick to remove the diplomatic immunity of its conservative members who are persecuted at home even for a tweet, but left-wing MEPs seem to escape the same treatment even if charged with much more serious offenses, such as assault bordering on attempted murder.

After all this time, the fate of Italy’s Green MEP Ilaria Salis—known as the ‘Hammer Girl,’ and charged with three counts of attempted assault in Hungary—remains undecided. On Wednesday, April 9th, the EU Parliament’s Legal Affairs (JURI) committee once again delayed the debate on whether to revoke her immunity and allow authorities to continue her prosecution.
