Brussels is ‘honored’ Canadians want to join the EU — but says it won’t happen

Brussels reacted warmly to the results of a poll showing interest among Canadians in joining the European Union — before clarifying that the idea is a nonstarter.

… Later, in response to a journalist’s question, Pinho confirmed that Article 49 of the Treaty on the European Union states that only European states can apply for EU membership.

America’s deep political divisions are splitting offices along TDS lines

Maga is tearing America’s offices apart

When a 29-year-old American woman was told by her closest colleague at work that he was off to vote “with my Maga hat and my big old flag”, she initially thought it was a joke.

“We’ve gone out with our other coworkers for happy hour, I invited him to my wedding next year, he confided in me about his mother’s health and overall we’ve built a great rapport. So I thought we saw eye-to-eye on everything,” she wrote on an internet forum.

Once she realised he was serious, she wasn’t sure how to continue the working relationship.

I think that woman needs psychiatric leave.

The Liberal party is still courting China — and wondering why Trump isn’t happy

There’s such a thing as cutting off your nose to spite your face, and the tariff war between Canada and the US is starting to look like a prime example.

On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a 25 percent surcharge on electricity exports to the US, affecting an estimated 1.5 million households and businesses in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Trump responded with all-caps outrage, raising the March 12 tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada from 25 to 50 percent — a move that would be devastating for Ontario’s auto sector. How, the President asked, could Canada stoop so low as to use electricity — a resource that impacts the daily lives of innocent people — as a bargaining chip and a threat?

Mark Carney’s ‘Climate Tax Rollback’ is a Sleight of Hand

One of the biggest mysteries of the past decade or so has been the lingering of Justin Trudeau. Just how has he managed to stay in post for so long? Nonetheless, the political crises that are inevitably caused by victims of woke-green ideology’s disengagement from reality ultimately led to the Canadian Prime Minister’s resignation. Rather than taking the question of the legitimacy of his Government to the public, in characteristically cowardly style Trudeau suspended Parliament until his party had chosen a successor. Subsequently, the Liberal Party has chosen former Governor of both the Bank of Canada (2008-13) and the Bank of England (2013-20), Mark Carney. Among his policy commitments, Carney has told Canadians that he will abolish the country’s hated Consumer Carbon Tax. But is this about-face on climate policy what it seems, and what does it say about Canada’s new Prime Minister and the next?

Hotpot chain compensates diners after teenagers urinate in soup

China’s biggest hotpot chain Haidilao has offered to compensate more than 4,000 diners who visited one of its Shanghai branches, where two teens urinated into their hotpot broth.

A video of the boys peeing into their broth pot while dining in a private room was widely shared online last month. It is not clear who might have filmed the incident.

Police said the 17-year-olds, who were drunk at the time, were detained soon after the incident.

There’s too much vibrant diversity in food services to warrant the risk in the GTA.

‘Just say thank you’: Lutnick says Canada is acting like Ukraine in Trump negotiations

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc are set to meet Thursday in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who invited Ford to put an end to an escalation of the trade war between Canada and the United States.

Ford said he hoped it would be a cordial meeting, but it will come after both Lutnick and U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the premier and Canada in statements made to the press.

Canada sounds alarm at G7: ‘Nobody is safe’ from Trump’s tactics

Joly shops

OTTAWA — Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly plans to welcome her G7 counterparts to Charlevoix, Quebec, with a warning: “If the U.S. can do this to us, their closest friend, then nobody is safe.”

On the official agenda this week as Canada hosts the G7 foreign ministers: Ukraine, the Middle East, Haiti and Venezuela, but nothing about President Donald Trump’s trade war or sovereignty threats. Yet Joly told reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday that she plans to raise the issue with the European and British members, while advising them that “Canada is the canary in the coal mine.”

European Opposition to Trump Is Heavily Overstated

Donald Trump’s dramatic realignment of U.S. policy away from Ukraine and towards Russia will have consequences no one can now anticipate. We can hope they will be mostly positive. But one thing should be clear: If Trump had not done something like this, America’s Ukraine policy was steering directly towards a disaster which would have crippled his presidency early on and accelerated the decline of American power.
