Ontario plans to tie high school attendance to grades and mandate final exams. It’s getting mixed reactions

Quickly leaping from and locking up his motorized scooter, Toronto Grade 12 student Bilal Rahimi rushed into school during the Monday lunch hour, having missed his morning periods due to caring for an ailing uncle.

“Attendance is pretty important. If you’re not attending school, then you don’t know the stuff. You don’t know the material to pass the tests,” the 18-year-old noted, saying he’s open about absences with teachers, connects with friends to find out what he’s missed and works hard to ensure he’s caught up.

Nuclear reactor on moon crucial to U.S. ‘space superiority,’ Trump officials say

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Establishing a permanent U.S. base on the moon, including a nuclear reactor, is crucial before China or Russia does, top Trump administration officials said Tuesday at a major space conference.

The recent success of the Artemis II lunar mission, officials said, catapulted the U.S. ahead of its adversaries in a critical national security priority: space dominance. The Trump administration says it is taking a whole-of-government approach to developing technology that will support deep-space exploration and a long-term lunar presence.

Finland’s president on why he believes Canada could — eventually — be part of the EU

Finnish President Alexander Stubb says he exchanges messages with Prime Minister Mark Carney almost every day.

“We’re tight,” Stubb said with a smile.

Now, Stubb and Carney have the opportunity to talk in person.

Stubb is in Ottawa for his first official bilateral meetings with Canada’s prime minister. The pair are working to develop trade and defence ties, according to Carney’s office.

Not sure how long the EU has left and besides I thought we were on the waiting list for the Great Big China Co-Prosperity Sphere?

Canada was once a dream destination for Indian students. Is that changing?

Canada was once a dream destination for Indian students. Is that changing?

At an overseas education consultancy in the Indian capital, Delhi, students sit with their parents, flipping through brochures from universities in Italy, Germany and Australia.

But one destination, once the top choice, is now largely absent.

“Until 2023, most of our applications were for Canada,” says Shobhit Anand, who runs the consultancy, which helps students navigate the admission process, including visa applications.

Now, he says they have seen a drop of nearly 80%.

President Donald Trump said that Beijing assured him it would not supply any weapons to Iran.

China is Tehran’s most valuable ally, and Iran’s ballistic missile program is reliant on Chinese chemicals. In a Wednesday morning post on Truth Social, Trump boasted that he’d won over China.

“China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz. I am doing it for them, also – And the World. This situation will never happen again. They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran,” he wrote.

IRCC orders asylum claimants who crossed U.S. border irregularly to leave or face deportation

Asylum seekers who crossed the border from the United States irregularly and claimed asylum are being ordered by the immigration department to leave Canada as soon as possible or face being deported, after the passing of a new law tightening up asylum rules.

Immigration lawyers have expressed fears that many foreign nationals receiving warning letters from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will now cross back into the U.S. and be detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and deported.

And deported? They say that like it’s a bad thing.

U.S. sends thousands more troops to Mideast as Trump seeks to squeeze Iran

The Pentagon is sending thousands of additional troops into the Middle East in the coming days, as the Trump administration attempts to pressure Iran into a deal that could end the weeks-long conflict there while considering the possibility of additional strikes or ground operations if a fragile ceasefire does not hold, U.S. officials said.

The forces moving into the region include about 6,000 troops aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and several warships escorting it, said current and former officials, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military movements. About 4,200 others with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and its embarked Marine Corps task force, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are expected to arrive near the end of the month.

Europe Is Accelerating a NATO Fallback Plan in Case Trump Pulls Out

Europe Is Accelerating a NATO Fallback Plan in Case Trump Pulls Out

A fallback plan to ensure Europe can defend itself using NATO’s existing military structures if the U.S. departs is gaining traction after getting buy-in from Germany, a long-term opponent of a go-it-alone approach.

The officials working on the plans, which some officials are referring to as “European NATO,” are seeking to get more Europeans into the alliance’s command-and-control roles and supplement U.S. military assets with their own.

The plans—advancing informally through side discussions and over dinner meetings in and around the North Atlantic Treaty Organization—aren’t intended to rival the current alliance, participants said. European officials are aiming to preserve deterrence against Russia, operational continuity and nuclear credibility even if Washington withdraws forces from Europe or refuses to come to its defense, as President Trump has threatened.

The odd floor-crossing is one thing, but on this scale it undermines our system of government

The odd floor-crossing is one thing, but on this scale it undermines our system of government

Seeking to explain just where the Liberals draw the line on accepting members of other parties into their midst, House Leader Steven MacKinnon said the party would “keep a light on and a door open for all of those who want to support Liberal Party principles,” which he described as “immutable.”

And of course, he’s right. Liberal policies may come and go – see carbon pricing, immigration, defence spending, from a long list – but Liberal principles are as constant as the North Star. There’s only one. It is this: whatever it takes. Whatever it takes to get and stay in power. What. Ever.

Legal advisers help migrants pose as gay to get asylum, undercover BBC investigation finds

A shadow industry of law firms and advisers is charging thousands of pounds to help migrants pretend to be gay in order to stay in the UK, the BBC has found.

In the first part of a major undercover investigation, we reveal how migrants whose visas are due to run out are being given fake cover stories and instructed in how to obtain fabricated evidence, including supporting letters, photographs and medical reports.

They then apply for asylum claiming to be gay and in fear for their lives if they return to Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Poilievre says he’s not going anywhere, following double-digit byelection defeats

OTTAWA — Despite being dealt double-digit defeats in the three federal byelections that handed Prime Minister Mark Carney his majority, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he has no plans to resign.

“Canadians might be discouraged right now because of the current political situation, but let us say this, Canadians should not give up,” he said in the House of Commons on Tuesday, vowing to continue fighting for Canadians.

“And I will continue to lead that fight in this House, across this country, and in the next election.”
