Conservative MPs publicly back Poilievre as leader even after recent stumbles

Conservative MPs lined up Wednesday to endorse Pierre Poilievre’s continued leadership despite recent stumbles that have left the party on the back foot and facing three more years on the Opposition benches.

Privately, there are serious doubts about his viability.

Poilievre has faced a series of setbacks in the months since the last federal election, continuing what former leader Erin O’Toole has called an “annus horribilis,” or a horrible year.

GP who asked Muslim woman to remove her veil ‘because he was struggling to understand her’ is struck off for continuing to work while suspended

A GP who continued working after being suspended for asking a Muslim woman to remove her veil has been struck off.

Dr Keith Wolverson was suspended for misconduct after he repeatedly asked the woman to remove her niqab during an appointment, which she eventually did.

He later said it was because she ‘spoke poor English’ and he was ‘struggling to understand her’

I fear bloodshed will be the only way Europe can rid itself of Islam.

Trump Worse Than Mullahs Says Star

Trump Worse Than Mullahs Says Star

There’s more than one brutal theocracy the free world should worry about

In a dim corner of the University of Toronto’s Newman Chapel, there is a stained-glass image of Archbishop Óscar Romero of El Salvador. Proclaimed a saint in 2015, Romero is depicted holding a child while a military helicopter rains fire in the background.

After speaking out against the political murders, torture and massacres perpetrated by the Salvadorean military, Romero addressed members of the armed forces on March 23, 1980.

The author is a “professor of religion and environment at the University of Toronto Mississauga.”

Does that mean he worships Water Sprites?

Germany to Limit Ukrainian Men Seeking Asylum

Germany to Limit Ukrainian Men Seeking Asylum

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin will limit the number of Ukrainian men seeking asylum and facilitate their return home.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, April 14, Merz said Berlin would work closely with Kyiv on the issue.

“We will work closely [with Ukraine] on issues related to Ukrainian citizens who have sought asylum in our country and facilitate their return home,” he said.

Someone has to answer WTF is going on in Ukraine.

How much does Trump hate Canada?

How much does Trump hate Canada?

Canadians aren’t used to being hated by the United States. Stereotyped, sure. Ignored, absolutely. But hated?

We got a taste of it during Donald Trump’s first term. There were tariffs and lies and lots of weirdness then, too. But it seemed to be more between chummy adversaries, rather than outright enemies.

Well, something happened in the intervening four years. Between rounds of golf and trial dates, Mr. Trump seemed to nurture a white-hot animosity toward Canada, for reasons that escape any balanced mind. The MAGA hordes dutifully hopped on the bandwagon, all riled up over the latest scapegoat to be served up to them.

Christopher Eccleston is right about young white men

Christopher Eccleston is right about young white men

It’s not often that actors talk sense or deviate from liberal-left orthodoxies when speaking on politics, so when they do so, we ought to take notice. And when a thespian makes not one, but two, reasonable points in a single interview, it’s really time to sit up and pay attention.

In an interview in the latest edition of Radio Times, Christopher Eccleston, best-known for his starring roles in Doctor Who, Our Friends in the North and Hillsborough, talks of ‘a great trend in drama at the moment for antagonists who are toxic, white, apparently heterosexual, late-middle-aged men.’

The problem with Mark Carney’s Boomer-friendly populism

The problem with Mark Carney’s Boomer-friendly populism

Occasionally, events transpire that seem scripted to illustrate the political weirdness of Canada’s present moment. Recently, there were two. The first occurred when the prime minister himself appeared at the recent Juno Awards to present Joni Mitchell with a Lifetime Achievement Award, praising her as a Canadian icon.

Now, Mitchell ranks among the first tier of musicians of the popular era, and she richly merits whatever accolades come her way, but what stood out here was that she is 82, older even than the Baby Boomers; Mark Carney at 61 is a spring chicken by comparison. Meanwhile, she took the opportunity to return Carney’s praise, while lamenting the political conditions in the United States…where she continues to reside.

Trump posts image of himself with Jesus as administration’s pope criticism continues

NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump posted an apparently AI-generated image of Jesus embracing him on Wednesday, two days after he deleted a post that prompted criticism that the Republican president had compared himself to Jesus.

The image, reposted to Trump’s Truth Social account, shows Trump with his eyes closed, touching temple-to-temple with a similarly posed Jesus. Trump is standing behind a microphone, and behind him is an American flag. The original post had the caption: “I was never a very religious man .. but doesn’t it seem, with all these satanic, demonic, child sacrificing monsters being exposed … that God might be playing his Trump card!”

Pope is woke.

Why Pierre Poilievre might quietly welcome the new Liberal majority

Why Pierre Poilievre might quietly welcome the new Liberal majority

Officially, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is outraged. “The Carney Liberals did not win a majority government through a general election or today’s by-elections,” Mr. Poilievre posted on X Monday night, as the results erasing his leverage in the House of Commons rolled in. The Liberals swept all three by-elections, less than a week after they seduced the unlikeliest of floor-crossers, Marilyn Gladu, to join the Liberal caucus. “The Prime Minister spent the year on this cynical power grab,” he added.

CHARLEBOIS: Disappearing middle distorting Canada’s food economy

CHARLEBOIS: Disappearing middle distorting Canada’s food economy

Canada doesn’t just have a food inflation problem, it has a market structure problem – and it’s getting worse.

Over the last two years, we’ve been fixated on prices: why groceries cost more, why inflation remains stubborn, and why relief hasn’t materialized for many households. But we are missing the bigger issue. Canada’s economy is becoming increasingly K-shaped, and that is quietly undermining both affordability and innovation in our food system.

Is Washington About to Replace One Iranian Tyranny with Another?

Is Washington About to Replace One Iranian Tyranny with Another?

A recurring illusion in American foreign policy is that removing the most visible layer of oppression in a brutal regime, as in Haiti, Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq, is enough to claim victory. It is politically convenient and media-friendly, but in the instance of the Islamic Republic of Iran, looks to be strategically disastrous.

Today, as pressure mounts on Iran and US President Donald J. Trump signals a willingness to seize a perceived opening — most recently through a 15-day ceasefire — the same illusion is once again taking shape. The issue is no longer whether the regime in Tehran is under strain — it clearly is — but whether Washington is preparing, consciously or not, to replace a brutal clerical dictatorship with a brutal military one.
