Trump Dumps EV Mandate

This can’t be good for Trudeau’s EV Battery scam.

America is free from the electric car nightmare. In Europe, it’s just beginning

With one flourish of a presidential pen, they will be free. Amid the blizzard of executive orders that President Trump has said he will sign in the next few hours, one of the most significant, for the economy at least, will be his decision to end the rules forcing American auto manufacturers to focus their energies on electric vehicles.

President Trump is determined to go back to something that until recently would have been considered completely normal: a free market in cars. Under President Biden, a tax credit – in effect a subsidy – of up to $7,500 was awarded for every EV sold. And environmental rules were blamed for effectively forcing auto makers to make a larger proportion of their new vehicles electric.

Liberal leadership hopefuls flop out of the gate

Unlike Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould is not running for prime minister of Canada — at least according to her launch video. She has limited her declared ambition to becoming the next leader of the Liberal party of Canada: “We need to rebuild our party so that we can rebuild our country.”

While her opponents are running to beat the Conservatives — or at least to save the furniture — Gould appears to have no illusions. Should she inherit the party, it will be akin to moving into an unfurnished apartment during an affordability crisis, with a low bank balance to cover expenses.

Trump plan to deport migrants a ‘disgrace’, says Pope

Pope Francis has said that Donald Trump’s plans to deport illegal migrants from the US would be a “disgrace” if they materialised.

Speaking to an Italian TV programme from his Vatican residence, Francis said that if the plans went ahead, Trump would make “poor wretches that don’t have anything foot the bill”.

“That’s not right. That’s not how you solve problems,” he said.

As border anxiety mounts, ads for smugglers in Canada helping migrants illegally cross into U.S. flourish on social media

“Canada to USA. Safe Reach,” the Facebook post says. “No police. Low price. Payment after reach.”

“Canada to USA. Safe Game. Cheapest in Market. 100-per-cent guarantee,” reads a post on Instagram.

Smugglers offering to help people cross the border illegally into the United States are openly advertising their services on social media. The Globe and Mail has found multiple posts from people smugglers who are promoting “safe” routes to the United States, including from Montreal and British Columbia, with some claiming there will be no police involvement or checkpoints.

Trump Set To Deploy Troops at the Southern Border, Among Other Day-One Actions

President Trump plans to swiftly deploy elements of the American military to the southern border, beginning the crackdown that he had promised from the first day he launched his campaign more than two years ago. The president-elect will also end some Biden-era programs that allowed millions of migrants to be paroled and settled into the country.

Mr. Trump’s promise of the largest deportation operation in American history was one of the major pillars of his campaign, and unlike 2017 when his administration was staffed by political neophytes, he and his team have had four years during this interregnum to begin drafting executive orders.

Sleazebag Biden Pardons 5 Members of His Sleazebag Family in Final Minutes in Office

President Biden pardoned five members of his family in his last minutes in office, saying in a statement that he did so not because they did anything wrong but because he feared political attacks from incoming President Donald J. Trump.

“My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me — the worst kind of partisan politics,” he said in his last statement as president. “Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end.”

Mr. Biden’s action pardoned James B. Biden, his brother; Sara Jones Biden, James’s wife; Valerie Biden Owens, Mr. Biden’s sister; John T. Owens, Ms. Owens’s husband; and Francis W. Biden, Mr. Biden’s brother.

Terry Newman: Chrystia Freeland proves she’s unfit to lead

Sunday afternoon, at the St. Alban’s Boys and Girl’s Club in Toronto, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland officially announced her bid to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party. To call the event tense would be an understatement.

What was quickly made clear is that Freeland is woefully unprepared for the Canada that lies ahead of her — a Canada with an increasingly extremist anti-Israel/pro-Hamas segment who, even with a prisoner-hostage exchange occurring in Gaza as she announced her bid, were still unsatisfied with her party. A party that, frankly, did everything it could to not help Israel and appease the protesters. And now it’s clear where that’s gotten them.

Donald Trump has no vote but he may help pick Justin Trudeau’s successor

The race to become Canada’s next Liberal leader is shaping up into the battle that Justin Trudeau keenly wanted to fight himself — one in which U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump, and the forces behind his resurgence, are top of mind for Canadians.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre isn’t forgotten, but Trump has found a way to make himself a much bigger headache for Liberals in the immediate term.

Trudeau has spent months saying privately and publicly how much he was spoiling for the fight with Trump. He was sure that as Canadians saw the scope of what they’re up against — a vivid vision they’ll see on Monday when Trump is inaugurated, Trudeau and his government would be seen as the best, if only alternative.

Whoever “wins” will enjoy a bitter victory.

Trump to Lay Out Trade Vision—but Won’t Impose New Tariffs Yet

WASHINGTON—President-elect Donald Trump is planning to issue a broad memorandum Monday that directs federal agencies to study trade policies and evaluate U.S. trade relationships with China and America’s continental neighbors—but stops short of imposing new tariffs on his first day in office, as many trading partners feared.

The presidential memo directs federal agencies to investigate and remedy persistent trade deficits and address unfair trade and currency policies by other nations, two longstanding Trump irritants. And it singles out China, Canada and Mexico for scrutiny, directing agencies to assess Beijing’s compliance with its 2020 trade deal with the U.S., as well as the status of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, Trump’s updated North American Free Trade Agreement, which is set for review in 2026.

Toronto to stop cracking down on illegal cannabis dispensaries

Toronto’s bylaw officers will no longer crack down on cannabis stores that are operating illegally.

The head of Toronto’s licensing department, Carleton Grant, made it clear during Wednesday’s budget committee meeting that due to the lack of funding and dangers of dealing with criminal activity surrounding these storefronts, bylaw officers are “no longer effective” in stifling these shops from running.

In 2018, the city received just shy of $9 million in provincial funding, through the Ontario Cannabis Legalization implementation Fund (OCLIF), to crack down on dispensaries selling products to customers without a licence. In 2024, that funding ran out.

John Weissenberger: Canadian universities are rotten to the core

Our universities are doing just fine — so long as we overlook the misalignment of degrees to labour markets, administrative bloat and budget shenanigans, the foreign student debacle, discriminatory hiring and, of course, the ideological monoculture that’s tolerated the heckler’s veto for decades, advanced a cadre of antisemitic profs and nurtured a subset of pro-Hamas students.

Mezcal, tech bros and rappers: Maga 2.0 takes Washington

Former opponents of Trump are said to be begging to be part of his Make America Great Again crusade. It’s a turnaround from the chaos of 2016

The clock had just struck midnight at the pre-inauguration Crypto Ball in Washington DC, and recent converts to Trump’s new America — from California tech millionaires to influencers with glassy smiles and Barbie doll hair — were knocking back mezcal and dancing to 1990s rap. Snoop Dogg was on the decks.

In the lobby, Caroline Wren, a former Trump adviser, rolled her eyes at the latecomers to the Make America Great Again cause. Just a year ago, she said, most of the people here would never have supported the president-elect.

“Now they’re like begging. It’s like The Hunger Games to get in front of Donald Trump,” she said. “It’s hilarious.”

WHISSELL: Hello Carney, goodbye democracy

What drives a man like Mark Carney, who has held some of the most powerful economic positions on the planet, to subsequently slink into the role of prime minister of Canada?

“I’m not the usual suspect when it comes to politics, but this is no time for politics as usual,” Carney quipped at his launch to replace Trudeau in Edmonton. “It’s not the time for lifelong politicians such as Pierre Poilievre.”

Sweden’s Awakening: Citizenship of Dual Nationals To Be Revoked in Gang Crackdown

Sweden’s government has announced plans to amend the constitution to allow authorities to revoke Swedish citizenship for dual nationals involved in gang-related crimes. The move comes in response to rising organised crime and security concerns, which Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer has described as threats to democracy.

The reforms will enable parliament to strip dual citizens of their Swedish nationality if they are found guilty of crimes threatening state security or linked to organised criminal networks. This aligns with similar policies in Denmark, where citizenship can already be revoked for actions harmful to state interests. By targeting gang leaders orchestrating violent crimes from abroad, the government aims to disrupt networks responsible for a dramatic rise in shootings and bombings.
