Could a New Georgia Law Defeat Fani Willis Before She Tries Trump?

Efforts to remove the district attorney of Fulton County, Fani Willis, from her post could soon shine a spotlight on an avant-garde law that grants power to remove prosecutors to lawmakers rather than voters or governors.

Georgia’s law launched on July 1 and will begin to field complaints on October 1, just months before President Trump and 18 other defendants will stand trial at a Fulton County courthouse. Ms. Willis has decried it as “racist” — now, she might have to back up that charge in court.

Present At the Destruction

Will America be transformed by a “Fourth Turning” crisis?

“The old American republic is collapsing. And a new American republic, as yet unrecognizable, is under construction.” The opening line of historian Neil Howe’s The Fourth Turning Is Here (2023) jumps to the point. It also foreshadows the odd dualistic theme that seems to run not only through the book’s pages but through the very air of our national moment: intuitions of imminent doom and destruction, intimations of hope and renewal; one world dying, another struggling to be born. We sense that serious change, of one kind or another, is coming—and soon. Howe’s book tries to tell us why that is, and why we should find cause for optimism.

Historically known as Artsakh, this ancient Armenian region was brought under Azerbaijani rule in 2020.

“Billionaire City” in California may not go forward

No poor people allowed.

Last week, we looked at the latest update to the mystery surrounding someone buying up vast tracks of land around Travis Air Force Base in California. Rather than turning out to be the Chinese Communist Party as many of us had suspected, the purchasers turned out to be a conglomerate of tech and investment sector billionaires who were planning to build their own private paradise city on the largely empty farmlands they acquired for nearly a billion dollars

Ukraine War: Counter-offensive troops punch through Russia line, generals claim

Ukrainian generals claim they have breached Russia’s formidable first line of defences in the south, as the counter-offensive launched earlier this summer may be poised to gather pace.

Since June, Kyiv’s territorial gains have been very small – but is Ukraine finally at a turning point?

“Yes, it’s true,” says Yuriy Sak, an advisor to Ukraine’s defence minister, when asked if the breach had happened.

“Little by little, I think we’re gaining momentum,” he said.

Will Jeffrey Epstein’s Sex-Trafficking Clients Be Named?

For those who think the truth about the crime and slime associated with Jeffrey Epstein has been deep-sixed down the memory hole, there may be another bite at this rotten apple. Mimi Lui, an attorney representing the U.S. Virgin Islands, has filed suit in federal court against JPMorgan Chase. Lui charged that over $1 billion in suspicious transactions have been reported to the U.S. Treasury since Epstein’s death and that JPMorgan Chase ignored sex-trafficking red flags over many years, thus enabling these crimes. The case will go to trial on October 23 unless a settlement is reached.

MPs say democracy is fraying in Canada — but there’s hope

A number of MPs say Canada’s democracy is under pressure on a number of fronts, thanks in part to the impacts of social media and extreme partisanship.

But the eight MPs who took part in a series of one-on-one interviews with CBC’s The House over the summer also expressed a hope that changes to the Canadian system, and a deeper understanding of one another, could lead to better politics.

They hope we’ll stop noticing their greed and incompetence. People are tired of being f&cked over by the political class. Get used to it.
