California reparations: How do you put a price on racism?

Alvin Taylor and his sister, Pearl, were kids when the City of Palm Springs, California began burning down their neighbours’ homes. But they still remember the smell of the smoke.

“We would come home, and a neighbour’s house would be gone – just burned rubble,” Pearl Taylor Devers said.

In 1965, the City of Palm Springs began razing the Taylor’s predominately black neighbourhood to make way for commercial development near the city centre. Their father, a carpenter, had built their modest home from the foundation up. Their mother, a house cleaner, worked for celebrities like Lucille Ball and Amelia Earnhardt and took the children to church every Sunday

More than 200 residents in New Brunswick, Canada, have been affected by the dementia-like disorder that causes vivid hallucinations, an inability to talk and write, memory lapses and even physical paralysis.

Experts say the cases date back to 2015 and are among people aged 18 to 84, dozens of whom were healthy before being struck down by the mystery illness.

Conrad Black: How the Postmedia-Nordstar merger can save journalism

It was announced this week that advanced negotiations are underway for an effective merger between Nordstar Capital, the publisher of the Toronto Star and the Metroland suburban newspapers, and Postmedia, which publishes this newspaper as well as the Sun newspapers and the principal English-language daily newspapers in Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. This is not surprising, as both companies have been losing money, which is a process that even our governments in all their profligacy will eventually discover cannot continue indefinitely. The commercial advantage of such an arrangement would be to merge the business aspects of the two companies, while maintaining editorial separation: the savings would be considerable, at no cost to editorial quality.

Greg Piasetzki: John A. Macdonald saved more Indigenous lives than any other prime minister

Given that he died in 1891, the facts of Sir John A. Macdonald’s life are unchangeable. The story of his life, however, has changed dramatically. For most of Canada’s history, Macdonald was considered a nation-builder worthy of celebration and veneration. Today he is a war criminal, at least to hear some tell it. But a proper and balanced consideration of Macdonald’s life reveals that, through his own actions and policies, Canada’s first prime minister was directly and deliberately responsible for saving the lives of untold numbers of Indigenous people. Given the temper of our times, this is not likely to be a popular notion. But that does not make it any less true.

Why Germany’s Catholics turn their back on the church

Germany’s Catholic Church is in shock following this week’s report on the record number of people leaving it: Altogether 522,821 Catholics left their church in 2022, according to the German Bishops’ Conference. That’s an increase of more than 45% over 2021 and a figure that fits with the mounting criticism of the church’s sluggish reform process, over which many bishops don’t see eye to eye. And there’s no sign that the membership decline is going to slow, let alone reverse.

CBC Ponders Locking Chickens & Fox In Henhouse: As gender protests move closer to students, is it time for ‘bubble zones’ outside of schools?

As gender-related policies in schools draw debate, some are calling for “safe zones” to be established around schools to allow students to remain focused on education.

Safe zones — also known as bubble zones — effectively create a perimeter around institutions by either limiting or prohibiting certain activities, like protests, in a defined area.

It comes after hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters swarmed the streets outside of three schools in Ottawa last month, rallying on opposite sides over how gender identity is taught. At least one school went under a lockdown for the day.
