“Let’s not politicize oil!” How many times have you heard that admonition?

It was first coined in the late 19th century, when oil was beginning to emerge as the key lubricant of a modern industrial society. Having started as a new venture by private entrepreneurs, what took shape as the oil industry soon attracted the attention of all major industrial nations. By the early 20th century most of them had set up their national, that is to say state-owned, oil companies, thus making oil political while insisting that it shouldn’t be politicized. (The US alone didn’t and still doesn’t have a state-owned oil company.) From the start, the biography of oil has included another theme: fear of the world running out of oil. In the 1930s a report prepared for the British admiralty warned that oil may become “a scarce resource” within a couple of decades.

The US Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the undersea implosion of the Titan submersible and has not ruled out finding human remains – while also hinting that the probe could lead to criminal charges.

Captain Jason Neubauer, who is chairing the US Coast Guard investigation into the implosion of the vessel, made the comments as the search and rescue aspects of the response came to an end.

British adventurer Hamish Harding and father and son Shahzada and Suleman Dawood were killed on board the submersible, alongside the American chief executive of the company responsible for the vessel, Stockton Rush, and French national Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

Poland and Spain, where elections this year will determine the fates of the incumbent Law and Justice party and the rising VOX party, will receive much attention as a test of the phenomenon’s durability. The Nordic countries, though, will also be worth keeping an eye on.

What does the future hold for Prigozhin and Wagner after the mutiny?

The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that the Wagner head had agreed to leave Russia for Belarus as part of a deal to end his armed revolt, while charges against him for organising the rebellion would be dropped. Peskov added that Vladimir Putin and the Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko had guaranteed Prigozhin’s personal safety.

The warlord’s current whereabouts is unknown. He was last seen leaving the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don late on Saturday to a rapturous reception, with crowds of men gathering around him.

The president of General Motors Canada says she’d like to see the provincial and federal governments offer more consistent incentives to people hoping to purchase electric vehicles to compete with the options in the United States, and to increase the adoption rate for those types of vehicles.

Marissa West told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos, in an interview airing Sunday, that while the different levels of government have been very collaborative with electric vehicle manufacturers, there needs to be a consistent mechanism in place so Canada can “keep pace” with the United States.

In 2021, the Governor General assigned Kimberly Murray the role of special advisor to Justice Minister David Lametti on “Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites Associated with Indian Residential Schools.” Halfway through that mandate, she has submitted an interim report . Two of its recommendations reach beyond her mandate, in ways that should concern us.

First is the recommendation for affirming “Indigenous data sovereignty.” Murray states: “Indigenous data sovereignty involves amending the laws that put power in the hands of government institutions, universities, and church organizations — the ‘creators’ or copyright holders of documents — and shifting that power back to the Indigenous people that are documented within records.”

It was predicted that Vladimir Putin’s hold on power was tenuous. And now he is badly damaged goods.

By the time you read this, the fast-moving events in Russia may have outpaced this column . . . and Vladimir Putin. The latest reports say that the Wagner Group’s charismatic chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin has announced he is “turning his columns around.” This after his forces came within 100-to-150 miles of Moscow without resistance, indicating Putin’s weakness. Yet something has changed.

Perhaps some in the Russian command had given Prigozhin mixed messages and then chose not to support Prigozhin, i.e., he counted on support that did not materialize. Why else would he begin a military move toward Moscow, triggering the city to mobilize against a coup? You can bet that Putin will purge any military generals he suspects of questionable loyalties, and he will err on the side of caution, so anyone remotely suspected will be demoted, or in some cases imprisoned or even liquidated as an example to others.

A University of Wyoming sorority has slammed its female members for complaining after it allowed a 6ft2, 260lb trans woman to live in the house – insisting the term ‘woman’ is ‘unquestionably open to many interpretations’.

Sisters at the campus’ Kappa Kappa Gamma (KKG) chapter claim the organization changed the definition of a woman to allow trans member Artemis Langford to join in September 2022.

After the sorority’s leadership allegedly bullied and intimidated the girls to accept Langford, she was then quickly met with accusations she would ‘peep at (the other girls) while visibly aroused’.
