Young Canadians are pessimistic – for good reason

We have known for some time that today’s young people face more debt, more job competition and lower relative incomes than their parents and grandparents at the same age. But when we surveyed 1,509 young people – including those who did not attend college – we found there is a worrying lack of optimism about their economic prospects across the board.

In research undertaken for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, we explored the economic outlook and attitudes of young adults aged under 30 who were born or went to school in Canada. What we found paints a picture of a generation frustrated by intergenerational inequality and a strong sense that the deck is stacked against them.

Meanwhile women are being shot and beaten to death in Iran ….

Police’s new ‘hate crime’ officer bombarded with abuse on social media

Leicestershire Police is investigating trolls who bombarded the force’s new hate crime officer with abuse when she introduced herself online. Sumaya Bihi announced herself as the force’s new specialist officer on Twitter in a post on Monday, October 3.

However, she faced a barrage of abuse from numerous Twitter accounts. Some used racist and derogatory language, including comments about her appearance and referring specifically to her hijab.

Not sure I care for a “Hate Crime” officer that looks like a member of Iran’s Morality Squad.

What Happened To The Unicorns Propelled By Rainbow Farts?

From “PPE” to “flattening the curve,” the COVID-19 era has added a host of new phrases to our popular lexicon.

One of the most perplexing has to be “revenge travel,” which speaks to the zealous need many of us have to experience sunnier climes after a year or two in a pandemic holding pattern.

No one is quite sure who minted the expression; some people in the tourism business find it a bit distasteful. But it was on full display this past summer, as the mortal risk of COVID-19 subsided and travel returned in force. Airports around the world — including, infamously, Toronto’s Pearson — buckled under the strain.

They don’t want YOU to fly.

The myth of the ‘stolen country’

What should the Europeans have done with the New World?

Last month, in the middle of the COVID panic, a group of freshmen at the University of Connecticut were welcomed to their campus via a series of online ‘events’. At one event, students were directed to download an app for their phones. The app allowed students to input their home address, and it would piously inform them from which group of Native Americans their home had been ‘stolen’.

UN Human Rights Vote Reveals China’s Power and the West’s Decline

Reports show which countries fear China more than they respect the United States.

The so-called “global community” that Western liberals frequently look to for formulating and implementing “global governance” showed its true colors by voting down a proposal by the United States, Britian, Canada, and other, mostly Western, countries to debate a UN report on human rights abuses and alleged crimes against humanity committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against its Muslim Uyghur population in China’s Xinjiang province. The vote in the UN Human Rights Council was 17 for debate, 19 against, and 11 abstaining. CNBC reports that the defeat of the motion to debate marks the second time in the council’s 16-year history that such a motion has been defeated. The vote was a victory for China and a defeat for the United States and the West.

Germany: What poverty looks like in a rich country

Although Germany is one of the richest countries in the world, signs of increasing poverty are becoming increasingly visible across the country. Homeless people sleeping rough, mothers forgoing meals in order to feed their children, pensioners looking for discarded bottles to trade for the deposit.

According to the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband, Germany’s umbrella organization for welfare organizations, 13.8 million Germans either live in poverty or are at risk of slipping below the poverty line. The German government also voices its concerns about the growing gap between rich and poor.

The term poverty in this context does not mean that millions of people in Germany are at risk of starving or freezing to death. Instead, it refers to relative poverty, which is measured by the average living conditions of the society in question.

Germany to pay December gas bills for households and businesses in new energy crisis plan

Europe’s largest economy must cut consumption by 20 per cent to avoid potential shortages, expert warns

Germany is to pay most of the nation’s December gas bills as part of an effort to shield citizens and the economy from the energy crisis fuelled by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Berlin has riled EU neighbours by allocating up to €200bn (£175.5bn) for a “defensive shield” to ease the strain, amid warnings in Berlin that Europe’s largest economy must reduce its gas consumption by 20 per cent to prevent a potential shortage this winter.

Pretty sweet social programs!

Washington’s Double Legal Standards

Former CIA Director Mike Hayden, shortly after the FBI raided the home of former President Donald J. Trump, responded to a tweet by Michael Beschloss in a way that, apart from disregarding any presumption of innocence, seemingly endorsed the idea that Trump was a spy who, for allegedly having taken classified documents, should be executed by the government, as the Rosenbergs were in 1953 for having passed US nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union. “Sounds about right,” Hayden wrote over of photograph of the Rosenbergs on Twitter.

Full disclosure There is a bit of history between Hayden and me. I opposed his nomination to be CIA director, by saying at the time, “Bottom line: I do believe he’s the wrong person, the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Biden’s Misbegotten, Unscientific, Hysterical Obsession Over Climate Change Has Landed Us Back in the Grip of the Oil Sheikhs

So, OPEC+ went ahead and slashed 2 million barrels a day from production despite the pathetic entreaties from the Biden administration. The President and his minions went begging hat in hand — and got nothing.

Because of Mr. Biden’s misbegotten, unscientific, hysterical obsession over climate change and his holy jihad against American fossil fuels, we now find ourselves once again dependent on the Middle Eastern oil sheikhs.

Racist ‘View’ Co-Host Whines About Being Called Out for Her Racism

The cackling coven of ABC’s The View was blasting Republicans on all cylinders on Monday after Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) called out the radical left and progressive district attorneys for treating crime and soft-on-crime policies as a form of equity and unofficial reparations. Amid this pearl-clutching, “Sunny Hostin” (a fake name) whined about outlets like NewsBusters and how she gets called out for being a rabid racist.

VICE News Pretends Not to Understand Nationalism’s Appeal

The Western corporate media continues its ironic jihad against everything Western, because diversity, something-something, greatest strength, or whatever. Nod along, slackjawed racist.

To peddle its neoliberal ideological wares, the multinational corporate state, after years of ignoring the “far right” and hoping it would go away, is now forced to contend with its electoral successes as it works to marginalize the undesirables. First the power structure ignores, then it attacks.

Image of N.S. officers at ‘freedom fighters’ event shared without context: RCMP

An image of a Nova Scotia RCMP officer wearing a “thin blue line” patch while responding to a self-proclaimed “Freedom Fighters” event this weekend circulated on social media.

It was posted by Twitter user @Seebo429 on Saturday night, among others on social media, with the caption reading: “RCMP checking out the convoy cookout in the valley. What’s that patch on the officer’s chest? I don’t want to get my colours mixed up again.” The post received nearly 400 likes and over 100 retweets.

Doctors Bemoan Increased Penalization of Health Professionals Who Criticized Pandemic Measures

Encroachment on physicians’ autonomy and erosion of their independence escalated during the pandemic, while provincial regulators have been increasingly penalizing health professionals who don’t agree with the medical authorities’ dictates, doctors said in a panel discussion.

The Oct. 5 virtual roundtable, held by Citizens’ Hearing: Examining Canada’s Covid Response, featured Dr. Richard Schabas, former chief medical officer of health in Ontario; Dr. Chris Milburn, former head of ER for the Eastern Zone of the Nova Scotia Health Authority; and Dr. Eric Payne, a pediatric neurologist and researcher who practises in Alberta.
