Why Putin might have attacked Nord Stream

As Russia’s recent partial mobilization has shown, he is desperate

As the world wonders what happened to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, many suspect that Russian President Vladimir Putin is behind the sabotage. At first glance, it appears strange that Russia would damage pipelines that its own companies run. But Putin has several possible reasons for carrying out the attack.

One reason could be that Gazprom (the Russian state-owned gas giant) wants to avoid paying penalties for failing to fulfill its contractual obligations. Since August 31, Russia has halted gas exports via both Nord Stream pipelines, which follows a similar move in July where the Kremlin cited erroneous maintenance issues as the cause of the short shutdown that month. Despite the ceasing of operations, Gazprom is still contracted to provide gas to European nations, and it has become clear that the cessation is a political stunt. But after the explosions disabled the pipelines, Gazprom can claim force majeure, and avoid paying for its failure to deliver gas. Claiming force majeure would not be novel either, as Gazprom already tried to do so earlier this year under similarly suspicious circumstances.

Iran cracks down on journalists over hijab protests

The Iranian government has arrested dozens of journalists reporting on the widespread unrest triggered by the death of a young woman following her arrest by authorities.

Iranian security forces have arrested at least 28 journalists and photographers since the latest wave of anti-regime protests began nearly two weeks ago, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported this week.

The women-led demonstrations were sparked by outrage over the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini after she was arrested by the Islamic republic’s so-called morality police. Amini was arrested on September 13 for allegedly breaching Iran’s strict rules for women on wearing hijab, or headscarves, and “modest clothing.”

In Discussing Reparations, Honest History of Slavery Makes the Left Uncomfortable

The Left loves to promote “reparations”—but only up until the point where history and truth run counter to its simplistic narratives about the past.

British royals expert Hilary Fordwich threw CNN host Don Lemon for a loop on Tuesday when he asked her if the British monarchy should pay reparations for colonialism and slavery.

Lemon said to Fordwich, “[Y]ou have those who are asking for reparations for colonialism, and they’re wondering, you know, ‘$100 billion, $24 billion here and there, $500 million there.’”

Russia Expanding Its Influence in Latin America

Russia has been seeking to expand its influence in Latin America, especially since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine and Russia’s subsequent international isolation.

Russia’s way of enlarging its influence in Latin America is comparable to its tactics in Africa, where it has primarily sought influence through arms deals, the use of its mercenaries, election interference, and disinformation.

NY Times, Fast Friends With FBI, Suggests It’s ‘Toxic’ ‘Misinformation’ to Call for Defunding

New York Times technology and regulation reporter Cecilia Kang made the front of the Business section Monday under the headline “Toxic Election Narratives Spread Tentacles on Web.”

But Kang wasn’t content with yet another “misinformation” excoriation of the theory of a “stolen election.” She conflated opinions espoused by conservatives under that same “toxic” label, suggesting that merely calling for defunding the FBI (a new proposition in some conservative circles) and the idea that LGBTQ are “grooming” children for pedophilia were also examples of dangerous misinformation…

‘A statue of the Queen would look better than the succession of absolute rubbish’: ‘Mean spirited’ Sadiq Khan faces fury after snubbing statue of Elizabeth on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth for anti-colonialist hero and transgender sex workers

Sadiq Khan was today branded ‘mean spirited’ and a ‘disgrace’ for snubbing a statue of the Queen on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth in favour of an anti-colonialist hero and a group of transgender sex workers.

Calls have been made in recent days for the plot, currently used for a different monument every two years, to have a permanent statue of Queen Elizabeth II. However, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the plinth would continue to be used for temporary installations, as it has since 1999.

The author AN Wilson blasted Mr Khan today, telling Times Radio that an equestrian statue of the Queen ‘would look really good unlike the succession of absolute rubbish that we’ve seen stuck on that plinth over the years’.

CIA websites’ shortcomings resulted in dozens of deaths, research finds

CIA websites so flawed that even an “amateur” could find them led to the deaths of dozens of assets in China and Iran, research has found.

Security experts with the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto conducted a study into a web of “covert” U.S. websites after being tipped off by a Reuters journalist. Using only information and material publicly available, the researchers found a network of 885 websites that can be measured with “high confidence” to have been used as covert communications websites for the CIA. The Chinese and Iranian governments discovered these websites in 2011 and 2012, using them to capture and execute dozens of assets, researchers said.

Sweden: Deadly Gun Violence Reaches All-Time High in 2022

“It is no longer a secret today that much of the problem of gang and network crime with the shootings and explosions have been linked to migration to Sweden in recent decades,” Gothenburg police chief Erik Nord

Following its 48th deadly shooting which took place days ago, Sweden, once considered the most peaceful society in Europe, has registered more deadly incidents involving firearms in the first nine months of 2022 than were recorded during the whole of 2020, a year which previously held the record for the most people shot dead.

France to close another mosque, bringing total mosques closed 24

PARIS (AA): France announced it will close another mosque, accusing the imam of being radicalized, according to media reports Wednesday.

The Interior Ministry has started the process of closing the Obernai Mosque in the Bas-Rhin area, according to French BFM TV and Le Figaro.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter that 23 “separatist places of worship” have been closed in the past two years.

He added that the closures came after a request by the president to fight “Islamist separatism.”

“Islamist separatism” that’s a very telling term.

But the numbers don’t lie … A total of 22,000 people are under surveillance by the country’s intelligence services of which 4,600 are foreigners, said the minister.

Out of the 4,600 foreigners, there are 1,200 foreigners that are actively under surveillance, and 780 foreigners were deported during the last four years, he added.
