Economist who predicted housing bubble expects ‘long, ugly’ recession that will wipe out ‘zombie’ institutions

… Roubini whose prescience on the housing-bubble crash of 2007 to 2008 earned him the nickname Dr. Doom, said that those expecting a shallow U.S. recession should be looking at the large debt ratios of corporations and governments. As rates rise and debt-servicing costs increase, “many zombie institutions, zombie households, corporates, banks, shadow banks and zombie countries are going to die,” he said. “So we’ll see who’s swimming naked.”

I find it a little odd that the Star published this given Trudeau has turned Canada into a Zombie country.

Putin’s declares ‘I am NOT bluffing’: Vladimir warns he will use ‘weapons of destruction’, announces ‘partial military mobilization’

Vladimir Putin today issued a chilling new threat to use nuclear weapons against the West over Ukraine, warning world leaders: ‘I’m not bluffing’.

The desperate despot gave an address to the nation this morning in which he announced the mobilisation of 300,000 military reserves – a first in Russia since the Second World War – and referendums in occupied areas of Ukraine to make them part of Russia.

He then vowed to use ‘all means’ to defend the new territories, saying: ‘If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will without doubt use all available means to protect Russia and our people – this is not a bluff.’

Trudeau Commends Event Organized by Group Whose Chinese Affiliate Said Aims to ‘Spread the Voice’ of CCP

Any strong words Trudeau may mouth against China are to be taken with a very large grain of salt.

A democracy advocate is warning about the Chinese regime’s covert “cultural infiltration” after multiple Canadian politicians lent support to the opening celebration of a new Chinese library that’s part of a China-based project whose founder had said aims to “spread the voice” of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The new B.C. library was unveiled during a Sept. 10 “Night of the Mid-Autumn Festival” event held at a winery in Richmond, just south of Vancouver, which was celebrated by a number of federal, provincial, and municipal politicians and reported on by various Chinese state media.

The New York Times, Linda Sarsour, and Misinformation

Linda Sarsour and Mentors

In a hyper-politicized world, it can be easy to forget that two things can be true at once.

The New York Times seems to have fallen into that hole Sunday, in an article that largely whitewashed antisemitic activist Linda Sarsour. She is identified as a victim of a Russian troll farm’s 2017 campaign to smear her due to her faith. Sarsour had just helped lead the original Women’s March, which drew hundreds of thousands of people to protests throughout the country.

Why the EU elites hate Hungary

No, Viktor Orbán’s Hungary is not an ‘electoral autocracy’.

The EU’s demonisation of Hungary has reached a new low. Last week, the European Parliament agreed on a resolution, stating that Hungary is an ‘electoral autocracy’ and not a ‘full democracy’, and that it is undermining European values. A few days later, the European Commission recommended suspending €7.5 billion in funding to Hungary, citing concerns over democratic backsliding.

The Pope Abandons Cardinal Zen

As Hong Kong puts the bishop on trial, Francis still offers no support.

It was a Saturday morning in July 1997, one week after Hong Kong was handed back to China. Cardinal Joseph Zen was waiting inside the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, all smiles. He was there to baptize his friend and the founder of Apple Daily, Jimmy Lai. I was there as Jimmy’s godfather.

We were a happy little band that day. But today, 25 years later, Jimmy has been imprisoned. And 90-year old Cardinal Zen, who was arrested in May by national-security police, is about to be put on trial.

Continental Breakfast (Open Thread)

I can tell it’s getting cold because my small grey cat, who has a heck of a sense of entitlement for someone who was found as a kitten outside the vets in a shoebox with her three siblings, all looking little alike except for their giant ears, has suddenly taken to waking me up at all hours, sinking her claws into my flesh and purring like a lawnmower while drooling everywhere. She does this. Her thought process is: “I’m going to need somewhere warm to crash for a few months. Have I told you lately that I love you? I wasn’t really ignoring you before. Look, a mouse! Alive or dead, finding out is the fun part!”

So I guess it’s autumn. Via SDA Matt, the always watchable Chef John:

And also via Matt, this meticulous recipe from Adam Ragusea, whom (yes “whom”, I have standards) I’ll definitely have to check out.

I know you people have recipes. Warm, cozy, high-fat recipes. Have at it.

Islamist at the White House

Imam Azhar Subedar cavorts with terror-tied radicals… and Joe Biden.

Azhar Subedar is an Islamist with a busy schedule. One August day he is at a terror-related mosque in Boca Raton, Florida. The next, he is wakeboarding with someone whom the FBI alleged was a fundraiser for the Taliban. Two days later, he was at a global youth event, in Dallas, Texas, hosted by the US State Department. This past May, Subedar attended a Ramadan celebration at the White House, the invitation of which was from President Joe Biden, himself. Why would a radical Muslim be invited to an official gathering by the State Department or be allowed to step foot into the White House? This is no doubt a threat to national security.

‘They’re juicing the numbers’: Jim Jordan reveals FBI whistleblower who claims bureau’s creating ‘false’ narrative

The concerns of a politicized FBI have only been growing as partisan and targeted application of the law has moved from subtly suspicious to blatant. Now a whistleblower has come forward asserting that the agency has violated procedures to “create a false and misleading narrative” about rising “domestic violent extremism.”

As ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has been at the forefront of investigating suspected miscarriages of justice stemming from the FBI and, Monday, he issued a letter demanding answers from FBI Director Christopher Wray after a whistleblower made the case of “false and misleading crime statistics” being used to push a narrative of widespread extremism.

New from the Times: Russians hacked the Women’s March!

The burden, after the hoax of Russiagate, is on The New York Times to prove that its reporting on Russia is not fraudulent, is not a forgery, is not an anti-Russian variation on the anti-Semitic theme of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.  Accordingly, today’s story about Russian trolling of the Women’s March (against Trump) and the pushback against Linda Sarsour for her anti-Semitism for purpose of causing chaos (NYT forgot the sowing discord part) is facially not believable.  (Since when have Russians made anti-Semites uncomfortable?)

September 19, the lead story in The New York Times carried this headline in the print edition: “Trolls in Russia Schemed to Divide Women’s March.”

Luxury cars seized from 23-year-old ‘Crypto King’ as investors try to recoup millions

Two McLarens, two BMWs and a Lamborghini make up just a few of the $2 million worth of assets seized from a 23-year-old from Whitby, Ont., as his investors try to recoup millions of dollars they handed over to the self-described “Crypto King.”

But so far, Aiden Pleterski’s assets fall far short of what his investors claim they’re owed.

Creditors are working to unravel where at least $35 million provided to Pleterski and his company AP Private Equity Limited for cryptocurrency and foreign exchange investments ended up, according to a fraud recovery lawyer and documents filed in two separate actions reviewed by CBC Toronto.

I’m curious to see if the Crypto King’s ‘I’m just a 20 something kid’ defense holds up in court.

This is almost painful to read.

Stop Degrading Women With Transgender Caricatures of Who We Are

As an actual woman, I can generally be found in a state of constant rage and offense at the countless emotionally incontinent men who choose to LARP as women. How dare they grow their hair, get a set of falsies, and pretend they can even begin to understand what it’s like to live in a woman’s body? The mortification of female puberty, the discomfort sparked by a lascivious male gaze, the inconvenience of various biological processes, pregnancy scares, and joys — none of this can be assumed or replicated. How dare these men presume to understand — to be — female?

Poilievre challenges Liberals on cost of living in question period debut

Making his question period debut in the House of Commons, Official Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre focused in on the cost of living and the government’s handling of inflation.

Speaking in French, the new Conservative leader asked whether the Liberals would cancel planned “tax increases”—referencing scheduled hikes to the Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance premiums— saying “Canadians just aren’t able to pay.”

Nearly a quarter of Canadians cutting back on food purchases amid high inflation: survey

Amid soaring prices at grocery stores, a new survey has found that 23.6 per cent of Canadians have had to cut back on the amount of food they were buying.

The survey, conducted by Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab in partnership with Caddle, was conducted between Sept. 8 and 10 and involved 5,000 Canadians from coast to coast. Over the last year, 8.2 per cent said they’ve had to change their diet to save money on food and 7.1 per cent said they’ve skipped meals because of the cost of groceries.
