The French authorities have opened an investigation into the case of a young Jewish man in Paris who was killed by a passing tram while fleeing a violent assault that his family insists was motivated by antisemitism.

The victim, 31-year-old Jérémy Cohen, lost his life on Feb. 17 after being struck by a moving tram in the Paris suburb of Bobigny. A harrowing video of the incident posted to social media over the weekend shows an individual fleeing from a violent attack by at least a dozen gang members, before running into the street where he was knocked down and killed by an oncoming tram.

CRTC can regulate the internet and protect free speech, its chairman says

CRTC Chairman Ian Scott says the CRTC can handle the task of implementing the Liberal government’s controversial online streaming legislation, including safeguarding freedom of expression.

Speaking at Ryerson University in Toronto, Scott shrugged off critics’ concerns about giving the broadcast and telecom regulator the responsibility of figuring out how to put Bill C-11 into practice.

“Users of online and social media services expect freedom of expression, and they will continue to enjoy this under the new Broadcasting Act,” Scott said in the speech Friday, according to a transcript made available by the CRTC Monday.

Numerous Health Problems More Likely Due to COVID-19 Vaccines Than Coincidence: VAERS Data Analysis

Various health problems reported by people after receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccine shots are more likely caused by the vaccines than being merely coincidental, according to an analysis of data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

VAERS has been flooded with more than a million reports of various health problems and more than 21,000 death reports since the introduction of the vaccines in late 2020. Some experts and public officials have downplayed the significance of the reports, noting that just because a health problem occurs after getting the shot, it doesn’t mean it was caused by it.

Social media users seemed to foreshadow the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — and the FBI apparently missed it.

Now, the FBI is doubling down on tracking social media posts, spending millions of dollars on thousands of licenses to powerful social media monitoring technology that privacy and civil liberties advocates say raise serious concerns.

The FBI has contracted for 5,000 licenses to use Babel X, a software made by Babel Street that lets users search social media sites within a geographic area and use other parameters.

State Dept Launch New Division to “Support U.S. Values Associated With Cyberspace”

With the current context of rising corporate fascism and western authoritarianism in the forefront, the creation of a cyber division within the State Department looks more like another tool to promote globalism and block any on-line cyber activity that would be created or distributed against their interests.

As Orwell would predict, a U.S. version of the Ministry of Truth and democracy. The State Dept will officially define the U.S. values that will be permitted in the cyber-space. Any violation of those values will now be reviewed by the “Digital Freedom Coordinator”.

Will the U.S. Lead or Continue to ‘Lose Ground’?

The world is seeing Vladimir Putin’s clear plan to reestablish the Russian Empire. It also is hearing rumblings from Asia about restoration of a Chinese dynasty, and in the Middle East, a return to when Persia — now an extremely different Iran — dominated the region.

For any of these empires to expand, they need to take control of other states or groups of people. Those states can either be overrun and annexed, or they can be controlled and remain smaller, more manageable political units. Today, Russia in Ukraine is the focus, but the aspirations of China and Iran must not be ignored.

Russia, China and Iran are all totalitarian regimes with authoritarian leaders. Russia by its actions in Syria and Ukraine, as well as Iran for its actions in the Middle East, easily can be identified as terrorist states. China — with its genocide against the Uyghurs, its illegal seizure of Hong Kong, and its continuing threats against Taiwan — should also be designated that way.

Germany closes Russian darknet market Hydra

Investigators said on Tuesday that they had shut down the German servers for Hydra, a Russian darknet marketplace that was used to sell drugs, forged documents, intercepted data, and other illegal digital services.

They also seized bitcoin worth €23 million ($25 million).

Unknown individuals are also being investigated for “operating criminal trading platforms on the internet on a commercial basis,” selling narcotics, among other things, federal police said in a statement.

Liberal government tables legislation to force online giants to compensate news outlets

The federal Liberal government introduced legislation Tuesday to force digital giants to compensate news publishers for the use of their content.

The new regulatory regime would require companies like Google and the Meta Platforms-owned Facebook — and other major online platforms that reproduce or facilitate access to news content — to either pay up or go through a binding arbitration process led by an arms-length regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The wounded older brother of the Sacramento shooting suspect has now also been arrested in connection with the violent spree that killed six people on Sunday night.

Smiley Martin, 27, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning while still recovering in the hospital where he has been since the incident.

He is charged with possession of a machine gun.

He is the older brother of Dandrae Martin, 26, who was taken into custody yesterday.

Most Canadians support Liberal-NDP deal but feel it betrayed voters: poll

Half the country feels the Liberal-NDP agreement to keep the current government in power until 2025 was a betrayal of the people who voted for those two parties.

Despite that, a majority of Canadians still support the deal, according to a new Ipsos poll.

“The big finding for me was the tepid … reaction to the Liberal-NDP agreement,” Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos, said in an interview with Global News.

Toronto police’s financial crimes unit to investigate former union head Jerry Dias

Toronto police says it is investigating the former president of Canada’s largest private sector union after the union handed over money he allegedly accepted from a supplier of COVID-19 rapid test kits he promoted to members.

Police spokesperson Laura Brabant confirmed Tuesday the force’s financial crimes unit has commenced an investigation.
