Even the worst war comes to an end. Sometimes, as in 1945, the only outcome is a fight to the death. Mostly, though, wars end in a deal which doesn’t satisfy anyone entirely, but at least brings the bloodshed to an end.
And often, even after the worst and most bitter conflicts, the two sides gradually resume their old, less hostile relationship.
If we’re lucky, we’re beginning to see the start of this process happening now between Russia and Ukraine.
On Monday, United Nations secretary general António Guterres warned that, “Raising the alert level of Russian nuclear forces is a bone-chilling development. The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility.”
As hyperbolic as that claim may seem, the circumstances that would spur the Russians to use a tactical nuclear weapon are starting to fall into place. As laid out yesterday, the war is going badly for the Russians. Advances are moving slowly, when they’re moving at all, and casualties are mounting. The Russian economy is collapsing. Something’s going to break; it’s just a question of what breaks first.

The last two weeks we have been inspired by the brave resistance of Ukraine’s people to the brutal violence of the Russian invaders. Outmanned and outgunned, the Ukrainians have continued to fight against overwhelming odds, even as the invaders answer their resistance with atrocities like the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol.
Globalisation is becoming an increasingly dirty word — and for good reason. Over the last two to three decades, the West’s opening up to low-cost, export-oriented economies like China has hurt the working class and made us worryingly dependent on distant and fragile supply chains.

The president then cited a ‘fact checker’ in the New York Times and a Washington Post op-ed to counter anyone daring to lay the blame for skyrocketing prices at the feet of the president of the United States.
I guess if you’re going to gaslight working-class Americans who have been struggling with historic levels of inflation for over a year now, it’s good to have legacy media outlets backing you up.
Chilling drone footage appears to show Russian soldiers gunning down an unarmed Ukrainian motorist with his hands up — as a woman and child watched.

Ex-CNN anchor Chris Cuomo is accusing his former colleagues of mounting a smear campaign after he was fired for helping his governor brother fight sexual harassment allegations, as he demands $125 million in severance from the network in private arbitration proceedings.
In a filing on Wednesday, Cuomo charged CNN with ruining his reputation and violating his contract by letting employees publicly criticize him.
‘Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor, publicly assailed Cuomo’s ethics as a journalist and falsely claimed that Cuomo “threatened” Zucker.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has decided his best chance of re-election in June is to cozy up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rather than anyone in the federal Conservative leadership race.

Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez says his department is discussing next steps after it gave funds to a magazine spreading vaccine misinformation.
As CBC News reported last week, the Department of Canadian Heritage — which helps to oversee the government’s response to a rising tide of false information online — confirmed it provided more than $17,000 to Common Ground magazine through a special program of the Canada Periodical Fund intended to help publications weather the pandemic.
The B.C.-based wellness magazine has been publishing unsubstantiated claims that COVID-19 vaccines could cause cancer in children and that ivermectin — a drug used to rid livestock of parasites that is sometimes prescribed to humans — can reduce COVID-19 mortality.

Two years have passed since governments first imposed lockdown measures across Canada in mid-March 2020, among other COVID-19 restrictions. The measures continued on an off over the two years, which is a deviation from the initial order of “two weeks to flatten the curve” and calls for an apology from officials, a constitutional rights group says.
On March 15, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom released a new report, titled “Two weeks to flatten the curve, two years to flatten our freedoms,” in which it said public health policies that were imposed and reimposed repeatedly have brought widespread economic, physical, and psychological damage upon Canadians.
CHICAGO — Jussie Smollett was ordered released from jail Wednesday by an appeals court that agreed with his lawyers that he should be released pending the appeal of his conviction for lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack.
The ruling came after a Cook County judge sentenced Smollett last week to immediately begin serving 150 days in jail for his conviction on five felony counts of disorderly conduct for lying to police. The appeals court said Smollett could be released after posting a personal recognizance bond of $150,000.
Roman Catholic Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said, “To a great extent, the level of civilization can be measured based on the level of its womanhood” — which is bad news for much of the Western world, because in 2021 it would appear all of our best “women” are actually biological men.
