In March 2020, a profile of the typical Covid victim emerged from Italy. The average decedent was eighty years old, with approximately three comorbidities such as heart disease, obesity or diabetes. The young had little to worry about; the survival rate for the vast majority of the population was well over 99 percent.

That portrait never significantly changed. The early assessments of Covid out of Italy have remained valid through today. And so it will prove with the Omicron variant.

Jurors in Kim Potter trial ask about not reaching verdict

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jurors weighing the case of the suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed Black motorist Daunte Wright asked the judge after a full day of deliberations Tuesday what they should do if they can’t reach a verdict.

Judge Regina Chu told them to continue working, as was explained in the initial instructions she gave them. The jury also deliberated for about five hours on Monday.

Former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter, who is white, is charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter. If convicted of the most serious charge, Potter, 49, would face a sentence of about seven years under state guidelines, though prosecutors have said they will seek more.

The Chinese Communist Party paid a Washington, D.C., radio station $4.4 million over the past two years to broadcast propaganda, according to new federal foreign agent disclosures.

The Virginia-based Potomac Media Group detailed its lucrative contract with the Communist Party’s International Communication Planning Bureau in filings last Thursday with the Justice Department. As part of the deal, Potomac Media’s WCRW, an AM station, airs content from China Global Television Network and a series of talk shows that portray China in a positive light.

“Kentucky man” ‘who traveled to Syria to join ISIS’ appears in federal court to face multiple terrorism charges

A Kentucky man accused of travelling to Syria to join an Islamic State training camp has been charged in a US federal court after being deported back to the United States, the Justice Department said.

The federal court unsealed an indictment on Monday charging Mirsad Hariz Adem Ramic, a dual US-Bosnian citizen, with providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

The defendant was also charged with receiving military-type training from ISIS, the DOJ said.

The man accused of stabbing to death the Conservative MP Sir David Amess has pleaded not guilty to his murder and planning a terrorist attack for more than two years.

Ali Harbi Ali, 25, appeared before the Old Bailey in central London on Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing.

Amess, 69, was stabbed on 15 October while holding a constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Embattled Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon blamed a bid to recall him on Trump supporters and Fox News in a three-paragraph rebuttal statement filed with the Los Angeles County Clerk’s Office.

“California DOES NOT NEED another political recall attempt sponsored by Donald Trump backers and frequent Fox News guests,” Gascon wrote. “This is not about keeping Angelenos safe, it’s about a political power grab by well-funded political operatives who have fought reforms — on juvenile detention, mental health treatment, police accountability in fatal police shootings, and the death penalty — for decades.”

Ghislaine Maxwell trial: jury asks to review transcripts from three accusers

The jury in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex-trafficking trial asked on Tuesday to review transcripts of testimony from three accusers.

Jurors in Manhattan federal court sent the judge a note around 10.10am, saying: “We would like the transcripts, testimony of Jane, Annie and Carolyn.”

Jane, who testified under a pseudonym, said Epstein started to sexually abuse her when she was 14. She told jurors Maxwell was sometimes present for, and participated in, such abuse.

She also discussed alleged group sexual encounters and recalled meeting Maxwell in summer 1994, at a youth arts camp in Michigan.

Teacher fired after call for ‘shooting’ anti-vaxxers

A Pennsylvania teacher lost her job after suggesting on Facebook that Americans who refuse COVID-19 vaccinations for religious reasons should be shot.

The General McLane School District in Erie County confirmed Monday that Mollie Paige Mumau has not been teaching at McLane High School or permitted in school district buildings since Dec. 8, a few days after she suggested in the Facebook post that the Republican Party “take those guns they profess to love so much and just start shooting all of their constituents who think this way.”

‘Ill-considered’ vaccine deal quashed by China cost Canadian taxpayers $250,000 for aborted study

China’s decision to effectively quash a deal for Canada to test and produce a Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine cost the government more than a quarter-million dollars, newly released figures indicates.

The National Research Council (NRC) paid Dalhousie University $253,997 to conduct a clinical trial of the CanSino Biologics vaccine last year — though the trial had to be called off before any patients were actually treated, a disclosure document posted online says.
