Tory leader pledges support for LGBT community health on question of ‘poppers’

OTTAWA – A Conservative government would respond to the needs of Canada’s LGBT community, including on the issue of “poppers,” says Tory Leader Erin O’Toole.

The recreational drug, a muscle relaxant used largely by men who have sex with men, requires a prescription and circulates in the grey market due to its limited availability, potentially jeopardizing users’ safety.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner recently sent a letter asking the federal health minister to study the benefits and harms of alkyl nitrites — the official name for poppers — amid a lack of attention that the lawmaker attributes to stigmatization of LGBT health care.

If the current federal polls are to be believed, the Liberals are set to soar to victory come September 20. The only question? Whether they’ll land another minority government or secure a majority. The same polls show Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives at risk of losing seats.

OTTAWA — The gulf in public support between the Liberals and Conservatives has narrowed considerably, putting Justin Trudeau’s gamble to regain a majority government in jeopardy, a new analysis of publicly available polling by Vox Pop Labs suggests.

The Liberals currently sit at 33.4 per cent support, while the Conservatives would garner 32.1 per cent of the vote if an election was held today, according to aggregate analysis by The Signal, Vox Pop Labs’ election forecast conducted for the Star.

The New Democrats command 20.1 per cent of voter support, with the Green party registering 5.8 per cent.
