‘We’re Not Doing Anything Wrong’: This Pennsylvania Brewery Refuses To Obey State’s Indoor Dining Ban

It’s a few days before Christmas in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and there is plenty of room at Seven Sirens Brewing Company.

The brewery’s 7,000-square-foot tasting room has a fire code capacity of 320, but during happy hour on Monday, there are only about a dozen patrons scattered around the place, sitting in ones and twos at socially distanced tables and sipping beers served by two masked bartenders. Whether they know it or not, everyone here is engaged in an act of civil disobedience, challenging Pennsylvania’s ban on indoor drinking and dining that will continue through New Year’s Day, at least. It’s a policy that assumes all establishments in the state are equally risky—that a tiny, crowded diner or coffee shop is no different than a massive, mostly empty beer hall.

‘Lasting honour’: Battle for Hong Kong ended on Christmas Day 1941 and Capt. John Reid was among the Canadians there

‘Lasting honour’: Battle for Hong Kong ended on Christmas Day 1941 and Capt. John Reid was among the Canadians there

By December 22, Mount Cameron, several miles north of Reid’s Regimental Aid Post, had become the linchpin of West Brigade’s defensive line as the Japanese forced their way from the east. The position was held by only 100 Winnipeg Grenadiers, reinforced by a platoon of British Royal Engineers — all that could be spared. After raining Mount Cameron’s defenders with artillery and mortar fire, the Japanese attacked during the evening with 1,000 troops. The Grenadiers and Royal Engineers fought back ferociously, but a Japanese breakthrough on their right flank threatened to encircle their position and forced their withdrawal northward to Wan Chai Gap. In his postwar debriefing in October 1945, Reid recalls the confusion of this night…

William Watson: The ghost of Trudeau père

Fathers have to deal with sons, and sons with fathers. Such is life since a couple of globs in the primordial goop invented sexual reproduction. Justin Trudeau is into his second government and sixth year in power. We can now begin to compare father and son, each born to wealth, each seen as a dilettante until entering Parliament, at 46 in the case of the father, 37 for the son.

Massive downtown Nashville explosion: Dire warning came from RV, Human remains found

Nashville authorities believe an explosion that occurred in downtown Nashville early Christmas morning was an “intentional act” and sparked by a vehicle blast.

Police came across a suspicious RV parked outside a nearby AT&T building near Second Avenue and Commerce Street before 6 a.m., when initially responding to calls of shots fired in the area, said Metro police spokesperson Don Aaron.

There was no immediate evidence of any shooting but officers alerted the department’s bomb squad, which was en route when a “significant explosion” happened about 30 minutes later, Aaron said.

Just before the blast, witnesses in the area report a dire warning coming from the RV: “Evacuate now. There is a bomb. A bomb is in this vehicle and will explode.”

Christmas in a Dark Time

Meaning and meaninglessness, and a year of trials

Scrooge will still send the goose around to the Cratchits, but the boy who delivers it will be wearing a mask. I imagine the nephew has called off his party, so that Uncle Ebenezer will not perform his usual Dickensian frolic (the geezer’s dance of grace and redemption). Instead, he will make the best of a bad time, sitting alone in the cold house and waving at his relatives through the Zoom lens.

Brexiteers, we did it: Against all the odds, the British people have struck an extraordinary blow for democracy and freedom.

Brexiteers, we did it: Against all the odds, the British people have struck an extraordinary blow for democracy and freedom.

They really did think they could stop Brexit. They genuinely believed they had the right – conferred on them by their superior station and education – to overturn the 17.4million votes to leave the European Union. That is the loud, clear and chilling message of the Remoaner hissy fit that has greeted today’s announcement of a trade deal being struck between Brexit Britain and the European Union – that even now, four-and-a-half years after the people expressed their Eurosceptic will, the Remainer wing of the political and media elites thought that none of this would actually happen; that we would remain tied to the EU forever; that the wishes of the pesky plebs would never really be acted upon. Perish the thought.
